Seeking Beta Readers for My Rewritten Middle Grade Fantasy Hello everyone! the 5 top reasons readers 👻 your book: First — looking for critique partners? Comment "JOINCPC"! Having beta readers quit before they reach the end can feel crushing. You might wonder, “Did they hate my book?” No!! I’ve been there, and I know you have a great story to tell. Don’t take this feedback personally—use it to fine-tune what’s not working. Reading an entire book—especially a draft before it’s received professional edits—is a *big* time commitment. So many factors go into making a book un-put-down-able, and if your book falls flat in key areas, even generous beta readers may struggle to finish it. Before you look for more readers, make sure to address these 5 issues: READABILITY issues: 🐢1. Slow pacing: If a story moves too slowly, readers lose interest. Unnecessary scenes or characters, info dumping, and repetition will kill momentum. 💔2. Flat characters: Readers want to root for (or hate) dynamic characters. If your MC feels one-dimensional, it’s a major turn-off. 😴3. Lack of stakes or tension: If nothing is at risk, readers won’t care. Study the authors who keep you reading until 3am—they are tension experts! BETA READER issues: 🫤 1. They’re not a good match for your book Don’t just give your book to just anyone! Check to see who their favorite authors and books are, and what genres they like most. Get their feedback on your opening chapter before you entrust them with your whole manuscript. ⏳ 2. Unclear expectations or no deadline If you don’t set clear expectations or give a deadline, beta readers can easily push your manuscript to the side. Let them know what feedback you’re after and when you’d like it back to avoid being left hanging. Remember — tons of people DNF published bestselling books. There are a million reasons why people put a perfectly good book down — maybe the main character shares a name with their ex, or maybe they found a scene triggering. Or maybe life just got in the way. But beta readers are one of the best tests of readability. And while it’s totally normal to lose some, you want to make sure you have at least a few enthusiastic ones before you begin querying agents. Best of luck!!

Beta Reader 📚 I can’t believe I’m Beta Reading! Q: What is a Beta Reader? A: Beta readers receive unreleased work from an author to read and provide feedback to help strengthen the novel before release. Sometimes authors will send chapters one at a time or their whole book all at once to review and provide feedback for. I didn’t think I’d ever be a beta reader. I used to be so intimidated by the work and thought I’d be terrible at giving notes, but I’ve grown to love it! I love being able to share my thoughts with authors and having a closer relationship with them as they put out their work. I also love that they get to know how much I love their work (it’s the best feeling) 🥰 Some of my favourite authors that I’ve beta read for include @realmollydoyle, @lanasky101, and @lydiagoodfellow and I am honoured to have gotten to work with them. No idea how to sort through all your beta reader feedback? Never fear, author! I've got your back. • Before you jump into the realm of feedback and commentary, I suggest you take some time to prepare your heart. Yes, there will be praise of your precious work, but the point is to find out where it's weak. You must be willing to take the critique with humility & discernment but not crumble if it is not what you expect. • Thanks to @erinphillipsauthor 's Book Launch Workbook, the process of analyzing my beta readers' feedback was so easy! The questions are super helpful for pinpointing weak spots. Plus, they include a few "praise-only" questions that will boost your confidence. You can get her book on her site or Amazon, and you can check out her page for her own feedback-analysis-philosophies! • I'm also planning to make a flowchart resource to share with other writers to help them decide what feedback to take and what to leave in the comments bin, so make sure you stay tuned ❤️ • • • #christianauthor #authorsupport #authorsupportingauthors #authorresources #writerresources #writerresource #writingresources #authortok #authorsupport #betareader #booktok #authorgram #christianauthors #feedbackiskey #ChristianBookstagram #Christianbooktok #betareaders #betareading

I have comments from a few beta readers while a couple others are still making their way through the monstrosity that is the 175k draft I shared with them. Now that I have my printed and bound manuscript in hand, I think I am ready to look at what they said. Enough time has passed from the vulnerable act of sharing my book and the terrifying act of receiving comments on it. I knew I needed to get comments from more than one person before I was brave enough to read them and it is nearly time. Not all of my beta readers had editing or feedback experience, so I offered them questions to consider as they read and reflected. They didn’t have to answer all of them, but the list covered the areas I knew I needed eyes on. Now with my printed manuscript, I’m going to capture all of the comments together, and then I’ll start marking up edits. I’m ready. But I’m still scared. My WIP debut fantasy novel has the societal affluence and disillusionment of The Great Gatsby, the manifested abilities of X-Men, and the reluctant chosen one raised upwards in society of Shadow & Bone. Plus a bit of sp¡cę, found family, banter, nicknames, and kn¡vęs. . . . . #fantasybooks #fantasyseries #author #fantasyauthor #fantasyreader #writersofinstagram #writercommunity #newwriters #writergram #newwritersofinstagram #writinganovel #booklover #bookworm #aspiringauthor #betareader #betareaders #questionsforbetareaders #editingtips #writingtip #writingtips
