OHTwo Spirit is a sacred and culturally specific identity within many Indigenous nations across Turtle Island. It reflects the unique roles, gifts, and responsibilities held by some Indigenous people who embody both masculine and feminine spirits—or who simply walk in ways that are outside colonial gender binaries.
But let’s be clear: Two Spirit is not the same as non-binary.
It’s not a trendy label, and it’s not interchangeable. Two Spirit comes with deep cultural, spiritual, and community-rooted meanings. That said, some Two Spirit folks may also identify as non-binary, and that’s valid. Just like some may identify as queer, gay, trans, or none of the above.
So while there may be overlap, Two Spirit isn’t a subset of non-binary identity—it’s its own powerful, Indigenous experience that predates colonization and thrives in our resurgence today. 🪶
Respectfully, non-indigenous people are not Two Spirit people (I gently invite you to research your own heritage and culture and find words within it that resonate with you). It’s not fair to appropriate and mis-use an indigenous identity that has been under constant attack and is vulnerable, please find your own.
