You’re probably wondering if PlantWave is real. In the age of AI, that’s a totally fair question. The fact is we’ve been making plant music since 2012, well before all of these AI tools. So, here’s what’s actually happening. PlantWave measures tiny electrical signals in the plant. Those signals naturally rise and fall as the plant responds to light, touch, humidity, and movement. We graph those fluctuations as a wave. Then we translate that wave into pitch, and that pitch plays the instruments you hear in the video. Nothing is added. There are no loops and nothing is pre-composed. The sound simply follows the plant’s changing electrical activity. Curious and want to try for yourself? The fluctuations are converted into signals that control the robotic arms. The keyboard playing a synth in Ableton Live. Our art reveals the hidden world of nature. Plants and fungi are often overlooked, but they're not so different from us. Scientists have found they can communicate with each other, remember things, and solve problems. Plants + Reiki 🌿💫 Watch till the end, this is pretty mindblowing🤯 I met this man whilst at a jungle school in ecuador, he was interested in what I was doing and asked to play with the plants, turns out he does reiki and tried it on the plants. After a few minutes the plants was responding to him without him directly touching the leaves, just hovering his hands above them, after about 5 minutes he was able to get the plant to follow his rhythm, which the plant then repeated for about 2 minutes untill he moved away 💫 Iv personally never had reiki or seen it being practiced but this was epic and he was really nice too, was a super cool experience 😎 💚🌿💫 Nature feels you Heals you Is you..... 👀 💚🌳💫 #plantmusic #reiki #reikihealing #plantmedicine #trance #biosonification #theamazon #ecuador

I’m always thinking about ways humans have used sound as a tool to represent important data for managing systems. Like these cow bells. I think of them as a primitive form of sonification (translating data into sound). There’s so much richness even in this crude system. Each bell has a slightly different characteristic, making specific cows identifiable even when out of view. The random quality of the sound is also quite pleasing when experienced in vast spaces. When people see my work creating @plantwave, their reaction is often one of surprise or disbelief. In a way, it’s really not much different than cow bells or a wind chime. The big difference is that we’re able to use sensors to read a plant’s internal water movements at high sample rate thanks to digital technology. And we’re able to graph those changes as a wave and translate that to pitch and then use the velocity in the change to change textures or instruments. While it sounds complex, it’s really just iteration and stacking of ideas that have existed throughout time. The difference is that we have the technology and we have the will to create new systems for enhancing human perception. With that, I’m excited to continue finding new frontiers of experience to illuminate through sound. #sonification #cows #switzerland #plantmusic #plantwave #travel #listening #biosonification #nature #relax

Ready to float into the Mycelium network? Tosca Teran has been placing pic-up mics, transducers, bone conductors onto surfaces, inside molds, buried in soil for about a decade now. Bio-Sonification to him is a way to connect people with nature, with nonhumans through sound. Sounds heard and felt create a lasting memory. Biodata Sonification is a process to translate complex real-time sensor data into musical notes and controls, exploring auditory sensory modality to provide insights into invisible phenomenon. These experiments involve placing electrodes onto mycelium, which send impulses that are converted into Midi data. This is then plugged into AniMoog, a polyphonic synthesizer. Simply put, this is Midnight Mushroom Music, Mycelium Network’s first radio, on air since 2018. Non-human lullabies. Non-human music collaborations. This project is part of Nanotopia, which works with bringing fungi biodata, fungi frequencies into mixed reality installations, VR is to speak of our shared environment, humankind’s Other-than-human entanglements.
