FAMy least favourite social media comment is that I deprive Jack of water so she gulps her warm, parrot-safe tea. And I’m not mad about the people who think this - no one should be angry at them. Animals ARE abused and neglected for social media, and we shouldn’t silence concern - not genuine concern that comes from a place of care for animals. When you silence it, it has this slow and quiet effect and that’s bad. It helps people get away with stuff that they should be held to account for. But speak up with kindness and concern, rather than assumption and anger. That’s when people are more inclined to listen.
P.S please know that my life is not worth living if I do not boil the kettle, give Jack a spoon to throw AND MAKE THAT BIRD HER TEA. Jack makes most of the rules here and please don’t write any comments asking if Jack is abusing her human because Jack prefers silence over airing those concerns (Jack is the exception to most rules).

WIBirds process visual information at a rate nearly twice as fast as humans. Their flicker fusion frequency, the speed at which they perceive individual frames of motion, is significantly higher than ours. What humans see as smooth continuous movement, birds perceive with far more temporal detail. This means a quick slide down a handrail that looks like a blur to us is a richly detailed frame-by-frame sensory experience for the bird. They’re processing twice as much visual data per second as the person holding them, seeing details in the ride that we physically cannot.

Ten years ago, that question kicked off this page. Somehow, this is now my 2,000th post. In a decade where social media has shifted, sped up, and reinvented itself more times than I can count, I’ve tried to use this space to slow things down—to show what researchers are doing, what conservationists are working toward, and why birds are worth paying attention to.
