Did you say ewe Or, that’s Baaaaaad 🐑 when you first learned you could use wool as a natural mulch?!? When sheep get sheared there are dirty, unusable and low quality wool that normally come from the belly and hind-quarters which is what they call skirting. This dirty wool is perfect for mulch in your garden, especially right around your plants. •The density of raw wool makes it an effective weed barrier. •Wool is exceptionally good at stabilizing the soil moisture supply. It absorbs water like a sponge, protecting plants from drowning, then slowly releases this moisture over time. •Wool has microscopic barbs, which serve as an effective deterrent to slugs. •Deer do not like the smell of wool. Probably because it smells like urine •Many natural garden mulches are high in carbon, which can pull nitrogen out of the soil as they decompose. Wool, is different though. It slowly releases nitrogen into the soil as it breaks down, which plants love. •Wool keeps the soil cool in the summer and warm in the fall, extending your growing season. The only thing I would not use wool for is direct sow seeding. The wool can act as mesh and not let the sprouts come through. Have you used wool in the garden? Did you even know you could use wool? 🐑 🦙 This year I got our wool from @fivemarysfarms. Being new to our area i didn’t know anyone shearing.
