Pero un día, tras una función comenzó a notar una ronquera persistente y muy molesta. Tras acudir al médico y hacerse unas pruebas le detectaron nódulos en las cuerdas vocales. No eran cancerígenos y los especialistas a los que consultó le aseguraron que con una sencilla operación podrían extirparlos y tras seis meses de rehabilitación volvería a cantar. Tras ser intervenida en junio de 1997 en el hospital Monte Sinaí de Nueva York, la actriz descubrió horrorizada que “había perdido mi voz de cantante”. Julie Andrews tenía 62 años y todavía una carrera por delante que quedó interrumpida por esta noticia devastadora. A medida que pasaban los meses descubrió que no recuperaba la pureza de su voz y cayó en una depresión. Para Julie cantar era su vida y fue su refugio en su dura infancia marcada por el alcoholismo de sus padres y los abusos de su padrastro. Fue operada en 4 ocasiones más pero no recuperó su gran don. Tras unos años difíciles Julie se reinventó. Junto a su hija Emma – fruto de su primer matrimonio con Tony Walton – se lanzó a la aventura de publicar juntas con gran éxito una serie de libros de cuentos para niños y descubrió el placer de la escritura. En 2010 recibió otro golpe devastador al morir su segundo esposo, el famoso director Blake Edwards, con quien estuvo casada 41 años y adoptó dos niñas vietnamitas. A punto de cumplir 90 años la actriz sigue añorando poder cantar con una orquesta pero nos quedan para el recuerdo sus maravillosas películas, su voz inconfundible y el legado de una mujer fuerte y valiente que nunca tiró la toalla a pesar de las adversidades. ¿Conocías esta historia?
