I typically mix 30% bleach with 70% water. 2️⃣ Dab off your brush – your brush should be damp, not dripping wet. Too much bleach causes blowouts and messy edges! 3️⃣ Use a hairdryer to dry between layers – speeds up the drying process so you can build up your shading faster without waiting around. 4️⃣ Neutralize your bleach – use hydrogen peroxide when you’re done to stop the chemical reaction and prevent holes from forming in your fabric. 5️⃣ Use flat synthetic brushes – they’re bleach-resistant and give you clean, controlled strokes. Natural hair brushes fall apart quickly! These basics will set you up for success from your very first piece! Want to learn everything about bleach painting in depth? Just avoid blends with spandex as they don’t bleach well and can get damaged 3️⃣ Gel or liquid bleach are both fine – although many beginners prefer gel because it’s easier to control and doesn’t spread as much 4️⃣ Gloves and a respirator mask with filters that actually protect from acid gas – this is crucial! Biggest beginner bleach artist mistakes (and how to avoid them!) 👇 1️⃣ Loading the brush with too much bleach – your brush should be damp, not dripping wet. Too much bleach causes blowouts and messy edges! 2️⃣ Not wearing gloves + respirator mask – bleach is a very strong chemical and can damage your skin and lungs. Always protect yourself! 3️⃣ Not neutralizing the bleach when done – use hydrogen peroxide to stop the chemical reaction and avoid holes in your artwork 4️⃣ Hand drawing the designs – it’s so much easier and faster to print out your design and trace it with a pastel pencil, then transfer it onto the fabric These mistakes can ruin your work and waste your time, so avoid them from the start! Let’s talk about the dilutions I actually use for bleach painting 💧 My bleach has 3.5% sodium hypochlorite content, and here’s how I dilute it: ✨For most of my artworks: I use a dilution of about 1:4 (one part bleach to four parts water) and build the artwork up layer by layer, normally doing around 4 layers total. This gives me great control and smooth gradients! ✨For portraits: I dilute the bleach even more—about 1:5 to 1:6—and work even more carefully. Portraits need that extra control for smooth skin tones and delicate details. The key is patience and building up gradually. More layers with weaker bleach = better control and cleaner results than trying to do it all in one go! 💃❗️Want to learn my full layering process, exact techniques, and all the details I use? The basics you need to start bleach painting 🎨✨ 1. Put cardboard inside to avoid bleach leaking to the other side 2. Check your bleach has sodium hypochlorite (active chlorine) – this is what actually lifts the color 3. Use synthetic brushes – natural bristles will get destroyed 4. Choose 100% cotton fabric for the best, most predictable results 5. Neutralize with hydrogen peroxide when you’re done to stop the bleach reaction 6. Always wear gloves and a respirator mask – protect yourself! Obviously there’s a lot more to bleach painting than just these few things, but these are the basics to help you get started. Comment “JOIN” and I’ll send you the details ✨ Now a bit more about the tips in the video… 1. Safety comes first - ALWAYS use gloves, respirator mask WITH PROPER filters (organic vapor filters are not enough) and work in a well-ventilated space. 2. Don’t rush it - every artwork that I create takes me at least 5 layers and 10 hours to finish (and that’s if I’m being quick). Patience and attention to detail will show up in your finished work. 3. Use stickers you have laying around the house to mask spots that you want to keep black 4. I had to learn this the hard way... Neutralisation with hydrogen peroxide is a crucial step if you want to avoid holes. Check a tutorial pinned to the top of my page. 5. Use a hairdryer between layers to speed up the drying process. Comment “JOIN” for more info! ✨Now let’s dive into the process✨ 1️⃣ Print out your design in full size and trace it with a pastel pencil – trust me, this will save you hours of trying to get the proportions right! This way you can transfer in just 10 minutes instead of struggling with freehand drawing. 2️⃣ Dilute your bleach even more for portraits – you know I always work with a weak dilution, but when painting portraits, I like to dilute it even more for maximum control. I talk in more depth about my exact dilutions in the Bleach Painting Club 😉 3️⃣ Use a makeup brush to blend easier – I like to apply the first couple of layers with a normal flat brush, and then go in with a makeup brush for the highlights. It’s so much easier to create smooth gradients this way! 4️⃣ Soak your sponge with your dilution to load your brush faster – just be careful because most sponges will dissolve pretty quickly when exposed to bleach. These tips make portrait painting with bleach so much smoother and more controlled!

Paint on sturdy 100% cotton fabrics for the best, most predictable results. Avoid polyester blends! 3. Use synthetic brushes – they won’t fall apart like natural hair brushes when exposed to bleach. 4. Transfer your design with printer paper and pastel pencil – way easier and cleaner than freehand drawing. 5. Dilute your bleach and build up your artwork in layers – this gives you smooth gradients and maximum control. 6. Use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process between layers – saves so much time! 7. Neutralize your artwork once you’re done – stops the bleach from continuing to damage the fabric. ✨Want to dive deeper and learn all the techniques, tips, and tricks?
