Answer ⬇️ My name is Mary Catherine, I’m a pediatric nurse practitioner working in primary care! Okay did you know it!? ERYTHEMA MULTIFORME! It’s a super aggressive looking rash that can be caused by several different things like viruses or other infections or medications. In this case study it was likely caused by whatever virus had caused the fever last week. Typically there is no treatment needed unless we need to treat the underlying infection. In this case the kiddo was managed at home and wasn’t very bothered by it and the rash went away in a few days. Sometimes EM can impact the oral mucosa and cause painful sores in the mouth. I suggest checking in with your kiddos peds provider if you see this rash so they can assess for other signs or symptoms of infection! Who got it right!? Tell me in the comments! *pretend case study to protect privacy #momlife #healthandwellness pediatrics #rash erythemamultiforme

Rashes can look similar. But they don’t always mean the same thing. Here’s what we want parents to know ⬇️ 1️⃣ Petechiae Tiny red or purple dots that do NOT fade when pressed. → Can appear after coughing or viral illness → But if paired with fever or a very sick-looking child, this needs ER evaluation 2️⃣ Impetigo Honey-colored crust around the nose or mouth. → Common in toddlers → Spreads easily → Needs prescription treatment → Pediatrician or urgent care visit, not the ER 3️⃣ Hives Raised, itchy welts that move around. → Often viral or allergic → Skin-only reactions usually aren’t emergencies → Add vomiting, breathing issues, or facial swelling = ER 4️⃣ Cellulitis Red, warm, painful skin that spreads. → Needs antibiotics → Same-day evaluation → ER only if high fever, severe swelling, or rapid worsening 5️⃣ Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease Blisters on hands, feet, and mouth. → Usually viral → Hydration is key → ER only if signs of dehydration or severe lethargy Not every rash is an emergency. But fever + a child who looks very unwell always deserves attention. If you’re ever unsure, it’s okay to get it checked. 📍 Manassas | (703) 589-9695 📍 Winchester | (540) 545-9999 📍 Aldie | (703) 775-4999 Click the link in our bio for bookings.

If you ever notice a sudden rash on your child, this simple check can help you work out if it’s something serious or not. When a rash appears, it can be scary. This quick test can give you reassurance or help you know when to act fast. 👉 Press and hold your finger or a clear glass firmly against the rash for a few seconds, then release 👉 If the rash changes colour or fades it means its a blanching rash, this is a reassuring sign ⚠️ If the rash does not fade or change colour when pressed, it’s a non-blanching rash. This means there is bleeding under the skin, which needs urgent medical assessment to rule out serious infections like meningococcal disease or sepsis 👉 For melanated skin: the rash can be harder to see, especially in the early stages. Check paler areas like the palms, soles or tummy, and also look for other warning signs such as fever, vomiting, being very sleepy or hard to wake, cold hands and feet, or fast breathing. ❤️ Not all non-blanching rashes are dangerous. Some are caused by pressure during birth, straining when coughing or vomiting or mild viral infections. It’s important to however rule out anything serious. Not all non-blanching rashes are serious, but all deserve proper assessment by a doctor. This is one of those simple skills every parent should know, it can bring reassurance when you need it most, and help you act quickly when it matters. We teach this and so many other practical ways to assess and respond to your child in our Baby + Child First Aid Course. Because knowing what to do in those first few moments can truly make all the difference ❤️ Thank you to all the parents who sent through their rash videos. Scary night! 😩 Here’s a recap and some essentials to keep on hand: Barking cough = Croup. First step: get them out in the cold & take some deep breaths. Utilize the steam shower with vapor drops or eucalyptus oil. Use a cool mist humidifier next to the bed. *DISTILLED WATER ONLY* Some essentials to have in the home so you feel more confident treating your child: 1. Pulse oximeter (child and adult size) -this will tell you their oxygen saturation percentage as well as heart rate. 2. Thermometer, of course. 3. Handheld nebulizer. 4. 3% saline for nebulizer to help loosen secretions related to RSV. 5. Cool mist humidifier 6. Distilled water. 🔗All items recommended are in my Amazon Storefront link in my bio!🔗

Why is this rash so worrying ➡️ It’s called a non-blanching rash, meaning it doesn’t fade when you press on it. In a sick child, this kind of rash can be a sign of sepsis. A serious, overwhelming infection that needs emergency care. 🏥⚠️ Now here’s the tricky part… Most of the time, it’s NOT sepsis. It’s often caused by a mild virus and nothing to panic about. But how are you meant to know the difference? That’s why we say: 🔍 “A non-blanching rash is guilty until proven innocent.” So if your little one is unwell and has a rash that doesn’t fade → head to ED. It’s likely to be fine but if it is sepsis you don’t want to wait! ❤️ Follow @andbreathefirstaid for more fear free, practical sickness tips from two paediatric ICU nurses. #parentingtips #babyfirstaid #newborntips #rsv #sickkids #sepsis #nonblanchingrash
