I’ll be honest-this one messed me up a bit. As with many people, I’m not always great about being a tourist in my own city, so I had never been to the Black History Museum. What I knew though, was that there is no Richmond history without black history. Being of a certain age, I can tell you that most of what I learned in my brief time there today was not taught to me in school. Even though there was a lot that I knew – learning and seeing it contextually and connecting all the dots was really powerful, and frankly, overwhelming. Afterwards, we got to take a great tour through Jackson Ward with Gary Flowers, where we learned so much about the neighborhood, the community, the buildings, and so much more. I wish I could take notes faster! What an amazing city we live in, and what amazing people to do the work of sharing the beautiful, awful, and complicated history as well. Special thanks to The Valentine for this program, to the Black History Museum for opening up for us on a Sunday, and of course, to Faithe Norrell at the museum and Gary Flowers for a wonderful tour. * I’ve also just realized I use the word amazing way too much when I speak. (But it truly was amazing.)

#IYKYK !! Shoutout the hometown FOREVER! My parents really ate that whole thing of going to Howard University, meeting each other and deciding to start their family here. 🤏🏾✨It’s a whole specific caliber that I’m sooooo proud to say I represent. A rich culture, an indescribable aura of Black people. So proud to be D.C. born, P.G. County raised!!! Being back home a few weekends ago had me really pondering on this. To be born and raised in the DMV was really a whole EXPERIENCE!! Especially as a Millennial and to witness the whole development of the 90’s into the 2000’s for my people in the DMV. My parents were so intentional with so much. We really grew up seeing so much Black Excellence on display across every single industry. The community, the eclectic representation of my people is just one that cannot even accurately be described! It’s literally FELT. You can just look around and see and feel it! #DMVarea #DMV #PGcounty

Before Harlem was a headline, Church Street was the movement. In Norfolk, this corridor once powered one of the South’s most vibrant Black business and entertainment districts—earning the name “Harlem of the South.” Jazz clubs, theaters, and hundreds of Black-owned businesses turned the street into a cultural engine. Icons performed at places like the Attucks Theatre, while entrepreneurs built a self-sustaining community during segregation. Then came “urban renewal.” Blocks of history were demolished. But legacy doesn’t disappear. It survives in the stories… and the streets that built the 757. #ChurchStreet #NorfolkVA #HarlemOfTheSouth #BlackHistory #UrbanRenewal 757History HiddenHistory VirginiaHistory

The Williamsburg Bray School and the neighboring First Baptist Church burial ground represent two of the most significant sites of 18th-century African American history in the United States. Located on Nassau Street in the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area, these sites provide a profound look into the lives, education, and spiritual resilience of enslaved and free Black residents. #ournarrativematters #thevablacklifestylemagazine #williamsburg #blackeducation #blackhistory
