Krystal Wilkerson Krystal has an uncanny energy and enthusiasm for blues music and dancing, and can often be seen at events all over the southeast and, indeed, the country, closing down late nights, frequently dancing until dawn. She’s been partner dancing in various styles since 2007; Blues stole her heart, however, in 2010, and has never let go. She’s a fierce competitor, making finals at multiple national blues dance competitions, and brings her fervor for connection into all of her dancing and instruction. Adam Wilkerson Adam is proud to call Huntsville, Alabama home, but he’s originally from Mississippi. He’s been partner dancing since 2004, starting in Ballroom, Latin street dances, and Lindy Hop, but he followed Krystal into blues in 2010, and it’s been his primary focus ever since. He’s passionate about social dancing and blues music, and loves to explore all different blues styles in his instruction and setlists. He strongly believes in teaching the context and history of the music and the dance, focusing on research in the Mississippi Delta in his spare time. His analytical approach to connection and value for intuition in dance provides a unique classroom environment that promotes self-awareness and improvement beyond the classroom. He believes in learning through experience and experimentation, so expect a LOT of getting up and dancing in his classes

Blues Dance Social Demo by Penny & Lucas @FIB On the morning of the event, while choosing a song for our social demo, we happened to come across “Time Brings About a Change” by Jontavious Willis. There is a quiet power in this song. At first we were simply drawn to its stillness. Later, when we looked up the lyrics and the meaning behind it, we were even more deeply moved. It’s difficult to describe — it felt like a kind of spirit slowly flowing through us. We didn’t choreograph anything, and we didn’t even try the dance beforehand. We simply sat there and listened. When the demo happened, it was the first time we truly placed all the emotions we had been holding into the music and let them come out through the dance. We invited everyone to form a circle around us, because we wanted to feel closer to the community. Not to perform for the audience, but to share that moment — and those unspoken feelings — in a more honest and intimate way. After the demo, one piece of feedback touched us deeply: “It looks like nothing happened, but everything happened.” Another dancer shared that he had once seen Jontavious Willis perform live in Grenoble. So when he heard the musician’s name at the event, he felt both surprised and excited. That moment reminded us that many beautiful things in life are created through connections — one after another, weaving together over time. We’d like to end by sharing the spirit this song gave us which we shared before our demo: In Blues, we don’t ignore hardship. We acknowledge it, we feel it, and we dance with it.
