CHM volunteer Joe Lynch shows off a 1959 DEC PDP-1 playing “Olson” by Boards of Canada (1998) through its control panel lights. With Peter Samson’s 1962 Harmony Compiler and 603 bytes of music data, this demonstration showcases the ingenuity of early computing and the creative possibilities of the PDP-1. #TechHistory #PDP1 #ComputerHistory

Ooof, where to start with this band. To cover our fascination with Boards of Canada would require a much longer post. The best way to encapsulate their magnitude is to say that they are far too enigmatic and esoteric to be considered “mainstream,” yet have far too big of an audience to be considered “cult.” They’re a band that has played maybe 10 live shows in their entire career (never once on American soil), and yet, if they were to announce two shows at Madison Square Garden tomorrow, not only would they sell out immediately, but people from around the world would travel for them. Us included. Even their interviews are done cryptically - often done either via email or answered via a third party… except this one. Taken from a BBC John Peel session in 1998, this interview features Boards of Canada performing a few tracks just after the release of their debut album “Music Has the Right to Children,” and just before they started to receive worldwide acclaim. Equipped with all analog gear and vintage synthesizers, rumor has it the duo lives off the grid in rural Scotland, with their headquarters being a cabin that houses all their gear out in the middle of the country. But the last decade or so has seen them un-operational - no signs of life or new material have been shared, outside of a cryptic NTS broadcast in 2019 and a few liked tweets. Always ones to shy away from social media engagement, they prefer the long way around to engage with their audience. 2013 saw the release of their last record “Tomorrow’s Harvest,” in which they hid several unmarked vinyl records containing a sequence of numbers in record stores scattered across the world, which led to a viral worldwide scavenger hunt encouraging their fans to work together to locate the then un-released album (sound off in the comments if you were a part of this!!) But Boards of Canada could get away with that. They enact and inspire a certain group of individuals to think outside of themselves, taking routes to create authentic engagement, routes that achieve a more genuine connection than traditional social media practices ever could. #boardsofcanada #electronicmusıc #interview #johnpeel #bbc
