Who knew PRUNING was so important? While Annabelles/Incrediballs are low maintenance, pruning is key to promoting large, prolific blooms and a great shape! PRUNING must-knows: When: Late Winter/Early Spring Why: Because Annabelles and Incrediballs bloom on new wood, cutting them at this time encourages more and larger blooms How much: Trim the stems down to 12-18” If you forget to prune, what you end up with are tall, leggy hydrangeas with smaller blooms! #hydrangeas #hydrangeaseason #hydrangealove

Most people prune smooth hydrangeas WRONG… here’s what actually works 👀 I cut mine back HARD every early spring (about 6 inches) and they come back bigger and fuller every year 🌸 Don’t be scared to prune them — they actually LOVE it. I also use a simple fertilizer that makes a huge difference in how full they grow. 👇 Comment “LINK” and I’ll send you my full hydrangea care guide + everything I use (Canada & US) Save this so you remember what to do each spring 📌 IMPORTANT! These types are for Smooth hydrangeas!! DO NOT do this to your big leaf macrophylla hydrangeas. Bought these ones from @terraathome and they are from @provenwinners

If you have a pinnacle type hydrangea, like limelight and quick fire, you can prune more than 30% as long as the hydrangea has been in its location and thriving for three full seasons. You can also clean out and remove more of the center stems that are growing up, especially if they are crossing each other and causing wounds in the bark. Less stems coming out of the base, means more energy per stem, and each stem will produce larger flowers. But you will have less of them. If you leave more stems, you will get more of a bushy shrub and the flowers will be smaller. Try pruning yours a little differently this year and see what happens! Remember not to do this type of pruning to a brand new hydrangea and we don’t prune macro hydrangeas, climbing, hydrangeas, oak leaf hydrangeas at this time of year. #Hydrangeas #HydrangeasOfInstagram #Flowers #Pruning #DIY #Landscaping #Landscaping #GardeningGoals #arlingtonheightsil #arlingtonheightsillinois

If your Panicle Hydrangeas have floppy blooms that hang to the ground, pruning for strength is the best remedy! Creating that strong interior structure, without pruning back to hard is key. Don’t make this mistake with your hydrangeas. Before you prune, make sure you know which type of hydrangea you have growing in your garden. Right now in late winter and early spring many gardeners start pruning hydrangeas, but different types flower on different growth. Some hydrangeas form their flower buds the year before on what’s called old wood. If those stems are cut back now, you may remove the flowers before they ever open. Hydrangeas that usually bloom on old wood include: 🌸 Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) 🌸 Mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) 🌸 Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) Because of that, pruning should be minimal. I usually leave my oakleaf hydrangeas mostly alone unless they need shaping or there is dead growth to remove. For bigleaf hydrangeas, I prefer to wait until the plant fully leafs out before touching it. Once the leaves emerge, it becomes much easier to see which stems are alive and which ones didn’t survive winter. At that point I’ll remove dead stems and clip off old blooms if needed. Reblooming varieties like Endless Summer can bloom on both old and new wood, but the earliest flowers still come from buds that formed the previous season, so I still prune them carefully after the plant fully leafs out. Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood can be pruned in late winter or early spring. These include: 🌸 Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) 🌸 Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) These are the ones I’m pruning back right now. A helpful rule of thumb when pruning hydrangeas is to avoid removing more than about one-third of the plant at a time. Save this post so you remember before pruning your hydrangeas this spring. 🌿🌸

Top 3 mistakes to avoid if you want show stopping hydrangeas!! 👇🏻 SAVE this post and follow @fidlinaroundhome for more home + garden tips + inspo 💙 🪴 Improper Pruning: Different types of hydrangeas require different types of pruning! For example, bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so prune after they finish flowering. However, panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood and should be pruned in late winter or early spring! 💦 Incorrect Watering: Hydrangeas need really moist soil, especially in their first year of growth. But overwatering (or not watering enough) can both cause stress to the plant. SO! Aim for deep, infrequent watering rather than shallow, frequent watering to encourage strong root development 🙌🏻 ☀️ Wrong Plant Location: Hydrangeas need the right balance of sunlight and shade to thrive. Too much sun can scorch the leaves, while too much shade can reduce blooming, SO plant hydrangeas where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade Are you making any of these mistakes?! Tell me below how your hydrangeas are doing!! Happy growing!! 💦☀️🪴 #hydrangeaseason #hydrangeasofinstagram #hydrangeaflower

Stop. Don’t prune your hydrangeas like this. Oakleaf? ❌ Bigleaf? ❌ Mountain? ❌ Panicle? ✅ Let’s do it. If you’ve ever cut your hydrangeas back and ended up with no blooms, this is why—different types, different rules. Panicle hydrangeas (like Little Lime) bloom on new wood, which means you can prune with confidence in early spring to shape the plant, control size, and get stronger blooms. In this reel, we’re showing you exactly: • where to cut • how far to go • how to build better structure year after year Simple, repeatable, and one of the easiest wins in the garden. 👉 Download our Hydrangea Handbook through the link in our bio—we break down every hydrangea type, when to prune, and how to get consistent blooms season after season. Hydrangeas like limelight, little lime, quickfire, bobo, etc. are panicles or paniculata. These can get HUGE and I see them planted very close to houses, walkways and other shrubs frequently. I believe this is a dwarf variety but even those can get large so radical pruning each spring is required to keep them in check. They form their buds during the early summer so pruning in early spring is a good time to do it. Typical size for panicles is around 8-10 feet wide and new stems can grow a lot in one season so be careful. This space is probably too tight for this plant but it’s better than the rose of Sharon, which can also get huge, and this client already has the plant with no where else to put it so I think this approach is the way to go here but she may need to get rid of it later if it becomes too much. If you have recently planted one of these and are now realizing it will likely be too big for the space, move it as soon as possible. If you’re wondering about your big leaf/macrophylla hydrangea, these can also get wide but I would not recommend this kind of pruning because you will be cutting off a lot of buds. Instead, cut off only the amount you need to, to keep it contained. Buds for these are formed in the fall for the following summer. More is more. What’s the secret for getting the perfect, flower-filled smooth hydrangea hedge? Proper Pruning 1️⃣ Cut the plant back by 1/3 its height and width in early spring. 2️⃣ Stagger the cuts and give it a rounded shape, with outer branches a bit closer to the ground so flowers will cover the entire plant, not just the top. 3️⃣ Make cuts 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch above a leaf node. #hydrangea #pruning #garden #gardening #GardenTip #HydrangeaHedge #flowers #FlowerGarden #summer #SummerGarden #nature #GardenWalk #CottageGarden #pwccshrubs
