Not just Cardigans, Pembrokes too.
Some Pembrokes are born naturally with a bobtail, but the majority have their tails docked when they are between 2 and 5 days old.
Tail docking is a cruel practice that has been outlawed in the UK, most of Europe, and Australia, Unfortunately, it’s still legal in the US.
Many breeders still do it today because a Pembroke with a docked tail fits the American Kennel Club breed standards (which has to do with aesthetics and not health).
So why don’t more breeders just breed for the natural bobtail?
Short answer: because it’s risky. The bobtail gene is semi-dominant - puppies that inherit two copies often don’t survive, and litters are smaller overall.
Breeding for it takes planning and luck. Docking is easier, more predictable, and still widely accepted - so many U.S. breeders stick with it.
But there is absolutely no need to dock a corgi’s tail 🚫
And why would you want to when it’s this gorgeous? 🥹🦊
P.S. If you’re in the U.S., most reputable breeders will agree not to dock your puppy’s tail if you ask ahead of time.
