Editing feels personal because writing is personal. You’re inviting someone into something you built alone quietly, carefully, with pieces of yourself woven into the pages. Good editing understands that vulnerability. It doesn’t rush you. It doesn’t dominate the work. It listens. It supports. It works with the story not against the writer. That’s when editing becomes collaboration, not correction. #bookediting #editorlife #writingcommunity #authorlife #trusttheprocess

This is what I would recommend! Write your first book as a standalone with potential to be a series! Leave it a little open. Make the ending one that could be changed to make it into a series. Then have a concept for a second book ready. Have a blurb, some main characters, etc. Then make a rough outline for what the rest of the series could look like. editor • editing • book series • writing • writers #bookeditor #bookcoach #writingcommunity #editing #writing

Making the reader work too hard too soon. Starting with backstory instead of a moment. Here’s what that looks like in real life: If page one is a blur of names, timelines, world rules, and context, the reader isn’t thinking “intriguing.” They’re thinking “I’m lost.” Confusion doesn’t create curiosity. It creates distance. And if page one opens with explanation instead of a live moment, the reader isn’t invested yet. Backstory can be brilliant. But it only lands after the reader has something to hold onto: a problem, a desire, a shift, a question that feels urgent. Try this quick fix: Start where something tilts, then thread in backstory only when the reader has already chosen to care. A simple gut-check: if you cut your first paragraph, does the story start faster and clearer? If yes, you just found the real beginning. If you want, drop your first 2-3 lines. I’ll tell you if you’re asking the reader to work too hard too soon, or if you’re starting before the story starts. #bookeditor #bookediting #authorhelp

You keep hearing “editor,” but not all editors do the same job. Here’s the difference 👇🏼 A copy editor or proofreader checks spelling, grammar, and polish. That’s the paint. The trim. The final touch. I’m a developmental editor. I make sure the house is standing first! I look at structure, flow, clarity, and logic. I check that your ideas make sense, your argument holds up, and your chapters work together. I make sure nothing collapses once readers step inside. Because perfect grammar and punctuation mean nothing if the foundation is shaky. So before you worry about commas and word choice, make sure the walls are solid. 🏠 #bookeditor #manuscripteditor #developmentalediting #authorsofig #writeyourbook publishingready selfpublishingtips authorresources editingservices

Standard manuscript format 101 — Keep this in your back pocket before sending to agents or publishers 🙌🏼 I actually prefer receiving manuscripts justified. It’s my personal preference as an editor. I don’t know why, it just feels right. 😬 So why does standard format say left-aligned? It’s about readability for agents and editors reviewing hundreds of pages. But once your book hits typesetting? Justified all the way. Golden rule: always check submission guidelines. 🙂‍↕️ ✌🏼& ♥️, LAPS ——— Hi, hey, hello! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m LAPS—copywriter and book editor for authors and creatives who want their words to build connection, make people feel things, keep readers up way past their bedtime. Number 3 is genuinely ✨crucial✨ If you’re paying good money, you should get a great editor. But you can’t always tell based on a social media interaction. Here are three things to look for + how to ask about them! A THOROUGH, CONSISTENT PROCESS. Great editors will read your manuscript several times during the edit process and have a clear vision of the possibilities from start to finish. Ask: “Can you walk me through the steps of your editing process?” INDUSTRY-STANDARD REFERENCE MATERIAL. For fiction in the United States, I use the Chicago manual of style, 18th edition— but different forms of writing and different countries use varying standards. Did you know that many publishers also have their own unique style guides? Ask: “What standards do you use for line and copy edits?” And the kicker: CLEAR AND UNAMBIGUOUS COMMUNICATION. Some editors (like me) update their authors at each step of the editing process, while others use a different approach. You should know how communication will go before you dive in—and so should they! Ask: “How often should I expect to hear from you during the editing process?” You deserve an awesome editor—and I know so many on this platform! Readers won’t know why your book feels right. They’ll just keep turning pages. That’s the difference professional editing makes. ❌ Not just fixing typos. ❌ Not rewriting your voice. ✅ But shaping clarity, pacing, and confidence, so your story feels intentional from the first page to the last. Most authors think editing is about being corrected. It’s not. It’s about helping your reader 👇 ✔ trust the voice ✔ follow the story ✔ stay immersed If you’re planning to publish in 2026, this is the stage that will change everything. 👉👉 Start with my FREE self-edit checklist (the link to it is in my bio) or 📩 Enquire to book an edit while some March–August slots remain open #BookEditing #ProfessionalEditor #IndieAuthorLife #SelfPublishingAuthor #WritingCommunity

What is developmental editing—and when should you hire a developmental editor? If you’re working on a nonfiction book, developmental editing focuses on the big picture: • Structure and organization • Clarity of ideas and argument • Chapter flow and pacing • Gaps in logic or missing content • Alignment with your target reader This stage happens before line editing or copyediting. It’s about shaping the manuscript so it delivers on its promise—clearly, cohesively, and strategically. You might need a developmental editor if: • You’re unsure whether your book is structured effectively • Beta readers are confused about your message • Your chapters feel repetitive or disorganized • You have great content but need help refining the framework Strong nonfiction isn’t just written—it’s designed. This mix-up delays more books than anything else. Proofreading is not a shortcut to a finished manuscript. Here’s the difference most authors aren’t told 👇 Proofreading = Spelling, grammar, punctuation → Done after the book is structurally sound Editing = Structure, clarity, flow, voice → Done before polishing the surface When authors skip straight to proofreading 👇 ❌ problems get missed ❌ rewrites happen later ❌ timelines stretch The fix isn’t “more editing”, it’s the right edit at the right stage. If you’re unsure what your draft needs right now, start here 👇 👉 My free self-edit checklist (link is in my bio) It helps you assess your manuscript before you book, calmly and clearly. #AmEditing #IndieAuthorUK #BookEditing #SelfPublishing #WritingProcess

Sharing your story with an editor can be scary. You put your heart and soul into this book so it makes so much sense. Here’s the thing… When I sit down to edit I’m not thinking “oh wow, this is bad.” I’m thinking “oh this is a great foundation, here’s a little tweak to take it to the next level.” My goal when it editing is honour your voice and help make the experience magic for the reader.
