Buried by volcanic ash and jungle for hundreds of years ⬇️ Borobudur Temple, Java Indonesia 🇮🇩 was buried under volcanic ash and jungle overgrowth, from eruptions from nearby Mount Merapi, combined with abandonment after the shift of power and religion in Java from Buddhism to Islam around the 14th century. It was rediscovered in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the British governor of Java at the time, during the colonial period. He heard stories from the locals of something huge being buried. He ordered a few hundred men to clear the jungle and dig up the volcanic ash. Built in the 8th–9th centuries AD during the Sailendra Dynasty in Central Java, Indonesia, Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Constructed entirely from over 2 million stone blocks, it forms a massive, stepped pyramid with nine stacked platforms: six square and three circular, crowned by a central stupa. The temple is more than a monument it’s a spiritual journey carved in stone. Pilgrims move clockwise from the base to the top, passing over 2,600 narrative relief panels and 500 Buddha statues, each level representing a stage of Buddhist cosmology from the world of desire to the realm of enlightenment. Abandoned around the 14th century as Java converted to Islam and buried for centuries under layers of volcanic ash and jungle, Borobudur was rediscovered in 1814 by the British under Thomas Stamford Raffles.
