Instead of walking, rolling, or crawling, this machine literally grows its body as it moves.
Developed by researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology, the robot extends itself using a small 3D-printing head that continuously extrudes thermoplastic material, creating a hollow tube that lengthens like a climbing vine.
Because the robot grows from its tip rather than dragging its entire body forward, it can slip through narrow cracks, wrap around obstacles, and navigate spaces that would stop most traditional robots.
