How Cicada Broods Work 🐞⏳ Cicada broods are one of nature’s wildest survival strategies. These insects spend 13 or 17 years underground as nymphs, feeding silently on tree roots. Then—almost like clockwork—millions emerge at the same time. Why the mass exit? Safety in numbers. Predators can’t eat them all, so most cicadas survive long enough to mate, lay eggs, and complete the cycle. Each brood is labeled (Brood I–XIX) and emerges in specific regions during specific years. Once above ground, adults live just 4–6 weeks. Their loud chorus isn’t noise—it’s a mating call. After laying eggs in tree branches, the adults die, the eggs hatch, and tiny nymphs drop back into the soil…starting the countdown all over again. Perfect timing. Pure biology. Zero mistakes. Nature doesn’t miss a beat. 🌍✨ #CicadaBrood #NatureTiming #13YearCicada #17YearCicada #MassEmergence #NatureIsWild #HiddenLife #InsectFacts #NatureExplained #ScienceReels #Biology101 #EarthMysteries #WildlifeReels #DidYouKnow #NatureLovers #EcoScience #PlanetEarth #ViralScience #MindBlownNature @bitzcasino

I didn’t know this species–or even this order!—existed! I LOVE LEARNING NEW THINGS!!! This has been peak feBUGuary for me, so far. As always, thanks to @eldiego.glez for the concept and bug list behind feBUGuary! Found in: Central Europe, northern Asia Taxonomy: Insecta / Mecoptera / Panorpidae / Panorpa / P. communis – Video description in the comments. – Approximate transcript: What do you get if you combine a scorpion, a horse, a fly, and a loverboy? It’s feBUGuary 23rd and today we’re talking about the common scorpionfly, Panorpa communis. Despite their common names, these guys are neither scorpions nor flies. They’re actually their own thing, belonging to their own order! They’re totally harmless, but they got the name scorpionfly because the males have this appendage that looks like a scorpion tail–but it’s actually their genitalia and a clasper, which they use to very gently hold females during mating. And that’s not the only gentle part of it–they actively court females, making specific sounds and movements (kind of like music and dancing), presenting them with so-called nuptial gifts in the form of food and saliva (kind of like kissing), and then they wait to be accepted by the female. They’re also so chill in all other ways. They’re scroungers, eating dead bugs when they find them, they like to sit on plants and just kinda hang out. Their larva are like caterpillars and they live in moss. Just a 10/10 creature. That’s all this time, friends. Keep looking for the little things! – Key words: #febuguary2026 insects entomology bugs insect facts febuguary 2026

The stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) is Europe's largest beetle. Those giant antler-like mandibles are weaponized jaws used exclusively for flipping rival males off branches during mating tournaments - they're too long to bite effectively. Females have smaller jaws but a much stronger grip. Adults survive only on tree sap, absorbed through sponge-like mouthparts. In the UK, stag beetles are tracked via a citizen science app - their population there is critically low. Video author unknown. The Animal Ambassador Caribbean Giant Cockroaches had some Valentine’s Day love added to their meal. 🥒❣️ Native to South America and the Caribbean Islands, they are also called cave cockroaches. They will flap their wings in mating rituals and the males are known to bring females a sugary gift (food item) during mating. 💖 Bet you didn’t think today would be the day that you learned something about cockroach love, but that’s what we’re here for. 😂 🫶 Happy Valentine’s Day!

It turns out A Bug’s Life wasn’t a documentary 😂 What looks like lots of individual ant, is actually one system. The queen in this nest lays around 100 eggs a day but she isn’t in charge. Males are only around for a brief mating flight once a year, then they die - so almost every ant you’re watching here is female. No leader. No planner. No ant that understands the whole colony. But paths form, food is stored, waste is cleared and the nest stays stable. Scientists call this a superorganism. A living network made of thousands of bodies. This colony is about 15 years old at Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, but wood ants live in stable woodland across Britain. They quietly protect trees by controlling leaf eating insects, recycle nutrients into the soil, and help create conditions where plants and fungi can grow. Ant colonies are now studied for designing AI and traffic systems because they solve complex problems without any central brain. We often think intelligence needs a leader. Ants show us that order can come from connection. Next time you see a trail of ants, you’re not just watching insects, you’re watching a living system hard at work. They’re safe to observe ... just try not to disturb the nest as colonies can persist for decades and are an important part of woodland ecology! #natureeducation #insects #abugslife #wildlife #ecology

Ladybug mating is a biological process closely tied to seasonal changes and food availability. As temperatures rise in spring or early summer, adults emerge from dormancy and begin searching for mates. Males locate females primarily through chemical signals called pheromones, which help them identify receptive partners among large populations. Once contact is made, mating involves prolonged physical pairing rather than a brief interaction. Although the transfer of sperm occurs internally, the male may remain attached to the female for an extended period. This behavior increases the likelihood of successful fertilization and reduces the chance of competing males mating with the same female. After mating, the female stores sperm and later lays clusters of eggs on the undersides of leaves, often near aphid colonies. This placement is strategic, as aphids are the primary food source for ladybug larvae. The life cycle then continues through the larval and pupal stages before new adults emerge to repeat the process. Original Video Credit: @regenerasur (No copyright intended. The peacock spider (Maratus) is one of the smallest spiders in the world, measuring around 5 millimeters, yet it is an aggressive and effective predator. While its venom is deadly to insects, it poses no danger to humans. The most remarkable behavior appears during mating: the brightly colored male performs an elaborate dance in front of the female, sometimes lasting up to 50 minutes. If the display fails, the male may be eaten. Even if it succeeds, survival is not guaranteed. Love is in the air, literally, for our mosquitoes. The mating sequence between a male and female mosquito starts while flying! The buzz from the female’s wings while flying attracts a male, who will then attempt to initiate mating. Cool thing about the females is that they have control over if the actual mating event will happen or not. These females mate only once in their life, so if a second, third, or fourth male comes around trying to start something, the female may respond with some swift kicks to get the male away. The mating choice for these female mosquitoes is very important, as they can only make it once. So in order to ensure species survival and reproduction, the mating choice better be a good one. #mosquito #biology #valentines #stem

Variable ladybird beetles mating 💕 It's a common scene for me seeing insects mating but it was my first time seeing the action itself from this beetle. It was also my first time knowing that the black one is a color form for this species. I've seen it before and can't figure out the species. I have learned through my current adviser's journal article (Adorada, 2000) that this species has 6 color forms. The female in this video is the normal form, while the male in this video is the 6th form. Amazing! ✨ Everyday we learn 🫡🫡🫡 Reference 🔸https://thephilippineentomologist.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Adorado.pdf #entomology #biodiversityph #nature #natureph #ladybird

Did you know? Praying Mantis: The female frequently bites off the head of the male during or immediately after mating, with studies suggesting this provides energy for offspring and allows the male to keep mating even after decapitation. Black Widow Spider (Latrodectus): Females are known to eat males after mating, a behavior that gives the species its name. Octopus (Octopus cyanea): Females have been observed suffocating a male during mating and consuming him, sometimes bringing him back to their den. Green Anaconda: The much larger female may consume the smaller male after mating to provide energy for a long gestation period. Jumping Spiders: Males must often use specialized courtship dances to avoid being eaten by females. Sagebrush Crickets: Females consume the fleshy hind legs and hemolymph of the males during mating. Australian Sea Slug: Hermaphroditic species that may stab their partner in the head during mating.

That’s a red cotton bug (also called cotton stainer) — Dysdercus species. The bright red body with black markings is classic. You’ve caught two of them mating, which is why they’re joined end-to-end. Why it matters (quick facts): • Common in India, especially near cotton, hibiscus, okra 🌿 • Feeds on plant sap and cotton bolls • Not dangerous to humans, but an agricultural pest
