From the moment I had my first job interview for MTV on Times Square in the early 90s I knew it was the place for me - which was lucky as the next couple of decades saw me there many weeks each year. Both my kids are MTV babies. If you’d told me back then there’d be a day I’d be willing to pay not to come, I wouldn’t have believed you. But that day is now. The 1977 Nestlé incident refers to the start of a major consumer boycott against the company over how it marketed infant formula in developing countries. Critics said Nestlé promoted formula as better than breast milk through free samples in hospitals, advertising, and sales reps who looked like nurses. In communities with unsafe water and low incomes, mothers would dilute the formula or mix it with contaminated water, which led to malnutrition, diarrhea, and infant deaths. Public health experts argued that breastfeeding was safer and free, while formula required clean water, sterilization, and money that many families didn’t have. The boycott was launched on July 4, 1977 in Minneapolis by the Infant Formula Action Coalition after years of growing criticism. Earlier reports had accused formula companies of unethical promotion, and a libel case in Switzerland brought more attention when a court told Nestlé to change its practices. When the company didn’t make significant changes, activists called for a boycott. The campaign spread internationally in the late 1970s and early 1980s, becoming one of the first global boycotts targeting a multinational corporation and framing consumers as actors in human rights advocacy. The pressure contributed to the World Health Organization adopting the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes in 1981, which set rules for advertising formula. Nestlé agreed to follow the code in 1984 and the U.S. boycott was suspended, but monitoring groups claimed violations continued, so the boycott was revived in 1989.
