We’ve all been there at some point - you’re in a relationship or situationship that seems to be going nowhere fast, but it feels like the right thing to do. You’re not ready to break it off for one reason or another, but you also don’t quite feel fulfilled by your partner. This is what’s known as ‘bread crumbing’ - or the practice of keeping someone hanging on with very little effort or commitment. “Bread crumbing” is a common phenomenon in relationships because it’s often easier to just stay where you are than realize that you deserve more. It’s also hard to recognize because the signs can be subtle and insidious, with your partner gradually withdrawing their attention or affection over time. There are a few key things to look out for; If your partner is regularly unavailable and seems unwilling or unable to make concrete plans with you, this could be a sign that they are not 100% committed to being in your relationship! They may also seem more interested in other people and other things, rather than spending time with you, consistently. Busy life aside, if your partner is constantly breaking plans at the last minute or cancelling on you without good reason, this could be a sign that they are not as invested in the relationship as you are. But perhaps the most unspoken telling sign is how your partner speaks about other people, including exes and potential partners! If they seem to see everyone else with rose-tinted glasses, or if they regularly flaunt “the other woman” or “the other man”, then this could be a sign that your relationship is just not a priority for them anymore. Unfortunately “bread crumbing” is common, so know that it’s not your fault - but it IS up to you to recognize and address the problem. The first step is always to have a heart-to-heart conversation with your partner, laying out what you need from them and why. If they refuse to change, then (as sad as it may be) it’s time to move on! Continuing on with someone who doesn’t fulfill you, or care to treat you well is a hell of a lot more hurtful than the pain of leaving.
