Comment ‘PRIORITY’ below and I’ll send you the link to our waitlist — you’ll be the first to know what we’re building. 🧬 Your nervous system has a built-in panic button — and it works in under 30 seconds. It’s called the physiological sigh: double inhale through the nose (short sniff on top of a full inhale), then one long exhale through the mouth. A 2023 Stanford study published in Cell Reports Medicine found it outperformed mindfulness meditation and box breathing for reducing anxiety in real time — across a 5-week trial with 114 participants. Why it works: the double inhale re-inflates collapsed alveoli in the lungs, clearing CO2 buildup faster. The extended exhale activates your vagus nerve, shifting you from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) dominance within seconds. Air hunger … That constant urge to take a big, satisfying breath. The repeated yawning. The feeling like the air just isn’t quite enough. It’s called air hunger. And here’s the part most people don’t realise: Air hunger doesn’t usually mean you need more air. It often means you’re over-breathing! When you breathe into your upper chest, breathe too fast, or keep taking big sighing breaths, you blow off too much carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide isn’t the enemy. It’s what helps regulate your breathing drive, oxygen delivery, and nervous system balance. When CO₂ drops: • Your brain senses threat • Your breathing drive increases • Your nervous system shifts into fight and flight • The urge to gasp or yawn gets stronger So you take another big breath. And another. And the cycle continues. The more you chase the satisfying breath… The more sensitive your system becomes. The more air hunger you feel. It’s not a lack of oxygen. It’s a breathing pattern that’s become inefficient and dysfunctional. The goal isn’t to force a bigger breath. It’s to retrain your breathing pattern to breathe softly, quietly, and efficiently using your diaphragm - so your body doesn’t feel the need to keep searching for relief. If this resonates, you’re not crazy! And you’re definitely not alone. If you’re tired of chasing the ‘good breath’, comment BREATHE below and I’ll send you my step-by-step guide explaining WHY this happens and exactly HOW to fix air hunger and improve your breathing 💌 #dysfunctionalbreathing #breathing #thebreathingphysio #breathingphysio #airhunger

Bilateral breathing has its place. But most swimmers are using it wrong. Breathing every 3 or 5 strokes is a great tool when you are learning technique. It improves balance, builds awareness on both sides, and helps you develop a more symmetrical stroke. But it does not need to be your default breathing pattern for every workout. During harder training, most swimmers perform better with more frequent breathing. Breathing every 2 strokes gives you more consistent access to oxygen, helps reduce CO2 buildup, and makes it easier to maintain your rhythm and pace. Use bilateral breathing to build technique. Use the breathing pattern that helps you swim strongest when it matters most. For many swimmers, that means breathing every 2 strokes. Comment “BREATHE” and I will send you a full guide on improving your breathing in swimming. #myswimpro #swimming #swimlife #swim #breathing
