Çocukluğu, ekonomik krizin gölgesinde ve babasından gördüğü ağır fiziksel şiddetle geçti; bu travmalar ve ergenlik döneminde çektiği ağır sivilce sorunu, onun toplumdan dışlanmışlık hissini ve insanlara karşı geliştirdiği mesafeli tavrı körükledi. Gençlik yıllarını ucuz pansiyonlarda, günübirlik işlerde, barlarda ve hipodromlarda geçiren Bukowski, hayatının yaklaşık on iki yılını bir postanede memur olarak harcadı. Yazmaya olan tutkusu hiç sönmese de, asıl çıkışını ancak ellili yaşlarına merdiven dayadığında, yayıncı Black Sparrow Press’in ona ömür boyu maaş teklif etmesiyle postanedeki işinden istifa ederek yakaladı.

Bukowski é conhecido por suas prosa polêmica e não é a toa que recebe o apelido de “velho safado”. Em seus romances, o leitor se deparar com personagens homens, machistas e mulherengos. Henry Chinaski é a sua principal criação e está presente em cinco de suas obras, incluindo Factótum. Nunca tinha lido nada do escritor norte-americano até agora.
Chinaski é um típico anti-herói. O personagem é um escritor que vive bebendo, em busca de mulheres e trocando de empregos - porque não para em nenhum. Em Factótum, o protagonista acaba de ser dispensado para combater na Segunda Guerra Mundial e, sem rumo, inicia uma perambulação sem muito propósito ou afeto a sua volta.
Chinaski não consegue atingir o sucesso no seu ofício com autor e, por isso, recorre as mais diversas funções para conseguir sobreviver (o que ele faz bem mal, diga-se de passagem). A displicência do personagem com suas mínimas responsabilidades e compromissos chegou até a me incomodar. É o extremo de quem não quer nada com a vida, a não ser beber e se relacionar com mulheres, sem se preocupar com o dia de amanhã.
A leitura é bem fácil e rápida, mas em alguns momentos senti que o enredo ficava um pouco repetitivo. Era Chinaski mudando de um trabalho para outro, de um quarto sujo para outro. É provável que essa tenha sido uma reação proposital que o autor queria causar no leitor!
A nova edição da @harpercollinsbrasil se destaca pela tradução, feita por Emanuela Siqueira, uma tradutora feminista (sim, isso mesmo), que contextualiza e traz um olhar crítico sobre as problemáticas existentes na obra de Bukowski, sem, no entanto, modificar o conteúdo. É a possibilidade de lermos autores e textos mais polêmicos, que refletem um pensamento de uma época, sem deixar de lado uma leitura atenta e consciente.
