YOEvery time I post something on bulbs many people are incredulous that you don’t have to plant them one at a time or pointing up. They find a way! Keep this in mind for next fall but also for summer bulbs!
I usually plant my bulbs right around Thanksgiving or even into December but this may vary based on where you live. I sprinkle some cayenne pepper or something else like they, along with garlic powder on the ground above and repeat periodically until the ground freezes and then again in the spring. That seems to keep the bunnies away for me. Some people report using human or dog hair, garlic powder, Irish Spring soap shavings, or planting under chicken wire and then removing it when they start to come up for protection in the fall. If you have a lot of deer or bunnies you may want to avoid tulips and go with daffodils, hyacynths and allium instead. (No guarantees for desperate critters though!)
If you’ve never tried bulbs before, there are summer bulbs you can try too, like gladiolus, dahlia, lily, crocosmia and anemone. Stay tuned for a follow-up on this soon because I have a bunch to get into the ground and I’m excited about it because I don’t often plant summer bulbs!
