This is a common question, but the answer may surprise you. 🕷️ Most bumblebees have little mites clinging to their bodies. 🔬 In many cases, the mites are difficult to see, but sometimes there are enough of them to cover large parts of the bumblebee’s body. 🤝 The good news is that most of the mites that live with bumblebees are harmless to them. 🧹 The mites are usually just hitching a lift to the nest, where they will live at the bottom and act as little housekeepers by eating detritus. 🐝 So if you see a bumblebee with mites, all you need to do is … nothing! When I was little I was taught to give a little sugar water to bumblebees who look tired. The unseasonably warm weather we’ve had in my neck of the woods is waking up all sorts (bees, turtles, ramps) before they necessarily have everything they need to be successful. These are the wee ones who get hit with the effects of global warming first, the canaries in the coal mine. So keep an eye out in the coming weeks for a being that could use a drink, or a little leaf litter mulch to hide from frost under. I know it doesn’t change things on a global scale (stares at multibillion dollar corporations and their emissions), but I know it mattered for the lil bee, if only for a few minutes 💖 just trying to be the best neighbor I can be

This #WildlifeWednesday, our feed is being taken over by Grace and Evan, our two RIsing Environmental Leaders interns! This is a DEM-wide internship program for rising high school seniors interested in environmental careers. “Today we set out with Pollinator Entomologist Toby Shaya to conduct a bumblebee survey at the Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area. We started out learning how to identify the types of bees we might capture and what makes these bees so special. In the field, we used our newly learned skills combined with Toby’s guidance to find locations with plants these pollinators are attracted to. We traveled to various fields to put our net skills to work and catch bumblebees! We found a lot of great bumblebees and were able to use our identification skills to identify multiple species for the survey. Sometimes I help weakened bumblebees, like you can see in the video. To some people, that might seem strange. But why would it be strange to help another form of life? Even if it is thousands of times smaller than me, does that make it less valuable? Or does it actually mean it needs more help, because it cannot ask for it itself? Maybe not everyone understands it, and that’s okay. But regardless of what others think, I will always try to do what I can. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But at least I can say I tried. Whether it is a human or an animal, everyone deserves help. ❤️‍🩹
