Charred timber cladding brings an elegant, timeless aesthetic to any project. Also known as Yakisugi or Japanese burnt timber cladding, Shou Sugi Ban is a traditional Japanese method of charring timber with fire. The process results in a black carbon layer on the timber boards which protects the material and reduces its maintenance requirements. If we had to do it all over again, we’d choose yakisugi (charred wood) for our siding without hesitation. Here’s why:   🖤 It’s visually stunning 🖤 It’s durable and resistant to water, fire, and insects 🖤 It’s long-lasting when properly installed 🖤 It requires minimal maintenance 🖤 It’s a natural material with deep historic roots With all that said, here are some things we’ve learned over the year that we wish we knew before:   *Just a note that if you choose a finish where the charred layer is brushed off before installation, the following points don’t apply.* Longevity of the charred layer:   Longevity of the charred depends on several factors: the type of wood you use, the depth of the char, your climate and weather conditions, the amount of sun or exposure to the elements (e.g., southern and western walls are more vulnerable). Certain woods, like Japanese cypress or Siberian larch, perform better than others.   Natural wear of the char:  Depending on all the above factors, yakisugi can start losing its charred layer in places as early as the first year, or it might not. This is a natural material and a natural process.   Oiling:  Traditionally in Japan, yakisugi was not oiled. While oiling is not strictly necessary, it’s recommended if you want to preserve the color of your siding over time.   Choosing the right product:  From our experience, synthetic products like petroleum-based oils don’t work well with yakisugi and contribute to early discoloration. After extensive research, we discovered an incredible natural product from Sweden, used for centuries on wooden structures in Scandinavia. It’s a mix of black pine tar and purified linseed oil from Viking Sales/Solvent Free Paint. That’s what we ultimately ended up going with for our yakisugi finish, and we’re very happy with the results so far. Only time will tell for sure. #VintageMeetsModern #OldMeetsNew #MixingStyles #VintageModern #ModernWithHistory #HouseBuilding #HomeConstruction #BuildingDreams #NewHome #DreamHome #BuildingJourney #HomeBuilder #HouseDesign #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DreamHomeDesign #yakisugi #shousugiban #shousugibanhouse

This is why we love Millboard cladding. And no, it’s not just because it looks good. We used Millboard Board & Batten cladding in Burnt Cedar on this project and the transformation speaks for itself. But let’s answer the questions everyone is actually asking 👇 Wood cladding or composite cladding? Timber looks beautiful at first. But over time? Warping. Fading. Rot. Maintenance. Composite cladding like Millboard gives you the same natural texture without the constant upkeep. No oiling. No staining. No worrying about weather damage. Is Millboard cladding worth it? If you’re thinking long-term, yes. It’s low maintenance, highly durable, resistant to moisture and doesn’t absorb water like traditional timber. That means no swelling, no splitting, and no repainting every few years. It’s an investment upfront but it saves you money and time over the years. And aesthetically? The depth in Burnt Cedar gives that modern, clean, architectural look without feeling cold or flat. When installed properly with the right structure and detailing, exterior house cladding completely elevates a property adding texture, warmth and long-term value. If you’re considering house cladding in Surrey, Berkshire or Hampshire, save this post for later and drop your questions below. Burning timber posts is an old-school preservation trick that still works brilliantly today. By charring the wood, you seal the outer layer, making it far more resistant to moisture, insects, and rot once it’s in the ground. The carbonised surface acts like a natural barrier, slowing decay without needing chemicals that can effect your soil. A little fire now means years of extra life for your inground timber. #homesteading #diyprojects #woodworking #gardeningaustralia #backyardprojects #fencebuilding #shousugiban #naturalbuilding #sustainableliving #farmhacks #timberwork #gardentips #permaculture #rurallife #homesteadlife #organicgardening #bushcraftskills #outdoorprojects #buildingwithwood #healthysoil

You asked for it… so here goes 🙌🏽 Budget friendly exterior cladding: What to do: 1. Secure horizontal lengths of timber to your wall (we used 19x38mm) with masonry screws with plugs 2. Secure black weed matting over surface (or you could paint black) 3. Once you decide on spacing between the timber lengths (we used 2x5mm spacers taped together to create 10mm), use it every time to set the timber apart. 4. Hammer or screw the timber cladding to the horizontal timber lengths 5. Paint 🖤 Products: • 19x38mm timber lengths (we got lengths of 4.5m). Ours were from @fulhamtimber which was the cheapest roofing batten we could find local to us (Brighton) • Masonry screws • Nails/screws • Black weed matting • Paint - we used Cuprinol shed & fence paint in black Grand total of… approx £90 Budget friendly enough? 😜 #diycladding #diyprojects #exteriorcladding #blackcladding #scandihome #exteriorhome #diytips #diyhome
