For decades, Boston Public Schools teachers, who have long prized their autonomy in crafting lessons, have been reticent to teach students about the tumult that followed the 1974 federal busing order, preferring instead to focus coursework on Southern integration battles. While Boston’s busing struggle has been a state-recommended topic in high school since 2018, it’s not being taught to all BPS high schoolers. Some students say they have never been exposed to Boston’s history of busing and desegregation in their classrooms. Now, as the city marks 50 years since the busing era strife, the district is attempting to expose more students to its painful history with a new curriculum spanning multiple days. A group of angry parents blocked a school bus from driving off with their kids last week. Local 12 was there when their busing problems came to a head in West Price Hill. One woman tried to pry the bus doors open as she yelled for the driver to let her grandchildren off. The chaos played out in the middle of a busy street. “She’s holding our kids hostage,” said Allisa Johnson. “She kidnapped them.” Through closed doors, the bus driver tried explaining she was just trying to drop the kids off at their assigned stops. "I stopped at their stop, and they refused to get off,” the bus driver said. “I'm not trying to keep nobody’s kids. I’m not trying to kidnap them.” More parents frantically showed up to the bizarre scene at 8th Street and Academy Avenue. “We’ve been having this issue with these buses all year. This bus is already a whole hour late,” said Alicia Reed. “My kids were supposed to be let off there before this even happened.” The driver and parents both called police. When officers arrived, Allisa Johnson was on the phone with Dater Montessori's principal. “It’s 5:30. They’re supposed to get off the bus at 4:10. They are nowhere near home,” Johnson said. The driver eventually let the children off the bus and showed police paperwork for the route. “Eight kids on the bus. I looked at it as kidnapping because it’s 6 p.m. right now. Dater Montessori gets out at 3 p.m.," said Johnson. Johnson says the bus has been dropping off her kids at Cleves-Warsaw Pike and Nancy Lee Lane. The children refused to get off because that’s not where the bus stopped Monday afternoon. “This is a problem,” Johnson said. “This is 100% unacceptable, and CPS needs to do something about this issue.” A spokesperson for First Student told Local 12 the bus driver on Monday was a substitute. First Student said the driver followed the board-approved route sheet, which was different from what the students were accustomed to. The company says the driver followed protocol and contacted dispatch for guidance. First Student is reviewing the incident and working with the school district to ensure approved routes are followed.
