🔋 Today is Button Battery Awareness Day-a vital reminder that these small but powerful batteries can be deadly. Button Battery Awareness Day was established in 2021 by Trista Hamsmith in memory of her 18-month-old daughter, Reese, who tragically passed away after ingesting a button battery.Every year in the U.S., over 3,500 children swallow button batteries. Tragically, some of these cases lead to permanent injury or even death-with at least one child dying every five days from button battery ingestion.
Button batteries look harmless-tiny, round, and easily mistaken for candy. But once swallowed (or stuck in the nose or ear), they can burn through tissue fast: causing esophageal perforation, vocal cord paralysis, and life-altering injuries.
And the scariest part? Your child might seem completely fine at first. No symptoms doesn’t mean no danger.
🧠 Curious toddlers + batteries in remotes, toys, hearing aids, thermometers, and key fobs = a recipe for disaster if left unchecked.
✅ Keep devices with button batteries out of reach
✅ Know the signs: drooling, gagging, coughing, discomfort

🔋 A note on button batteries:
If it is a button battery that your little one has popped up their nose, then you should call the poisons hotline immediately as button batteries can damage the surrounding tissue and warrants urgent removal.
Some information on risks:
👃 The puff of air should be short and sharp.
👃 A number of theoretical risks have been proposed, such as barotrauma to the tympanic membranes and lower airways. However, there has never been a reported incidence of tympanic membrane rupture or pneumothorax using the parent’s kiss technique
👃 Evidence from case reports and case series suggests that the mother’s kiss technique is a useful and safe first-line option for the removal of foreign bodies from the nasal cavities of children.

👉 Do NOT wait. Do NOT try laxatives.
Why
Button batteries can cause severe chemical burns, perforation, and bleeding within 2 HOURS, especially in children under 5.
Management (standard pediatric emergency guidance)
Immediate X-ray (neck, chest, abdomen) to locate the battery
If in the esophagus → URGENT endoscopic removal immediately (this is life-saving)
If in the stomach:
Remove urgently if:
Child is <5 years
Battery is ≥20 mm
Symptoms present (vomiting, pain, drooling, fever)
Observation is only considered in very select cases with serial imaging, but many centers still remove proactively in toddlers
⛔ Laxatives are NOT recommended for button batteries
⛔ Waiting “to see if it passes” is dangerous in a 3-year-old

Grab the honey. Or the jam. FAST.
If your child swallows a button battery, every minute counts.
🍯For children over 12 months: Give 10ml (2 teaspoons) of honey every 10 minutes, up to 6 doses while on the way to hospital.
🍓Under 12 months: Use jam instead of honey (due to the risk of infant botulism).
This simple first aid can slow tissue damage, reduce burns, and potentially save your child’s life.
Don’t wait for symptoms.
➡️Call 000 if they are having breathing issues or bleeding.
➡️If they are stable, call poisons hotline on 13 11 26 and they will advise where your closest hospital is (with xray capability)
