Not this mine. Not this place. The Boundary Waters are public lands — they belong to every single one of us, NOT a Chilean mining company. It’s not a question of if this copper sulfide mine would pollute the BWCA — it’s only a question of when. Why take such a risk with such precious waters on the line?

The Senate just voted to strip protections from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, opening the door to toxic mining in one of the most pristine freshwater ecosystems in the country. This wasn’t a close call about unclear science. The risks are well-documented. The public record is overwhelming. And still, on a 50–49 vote, Congress chose industry over clean water, wildlife, and the will of the public. After years of science, after hundreds of thousands of public comments (the vast majority in support of protection), after clear findings that sulfide-ore mining would cause irreversible harm to this watershed ... Congress just voted to override all of it. Not because the science changed or because the public asked for it but because industry pressure won. Worse, they didn’t even unravel these protections through a normal process. They used an obscure procedural maneuver to bypass safeguards and push it through. That’s not governance; that’s extraction of land, water, and wildlife, and a betrayal of public trust. Let’s be clear about what Congress just sold out: clean water, wildlife, recreation intact ecosystems, all in millions of acres of habitat that cannot be restored once polluted. And as federal land, it belongs to all of us. It does not belong to a foreign mining corporation, lobbyists, or handful of politicians willing to trade it away for short-term gain. This betrayal is part of a broader pattern where public lands and wildlife are being opened up, piece by piece, to benefit private interests while the public is sidelined. They’re counting on us to get tired, forget or give up, and stop paying attention after the vote. Don’t let them win. Call your Senators and Representatives. Tell them exactly what you think about this vote, and that you’re paying attention to what comes next. Congressional switchboard: (202) 224-3121 Talk about this vote. Share with your network. Make our outrage impossible to ignore because accountability doesn’t stop when the vote is over, it starts there. Congress needs to understand that selling out our wild places has consequences, and they need to really HEAR US.

“Not this mine, not this place.” The fight isn’t over, it’s just moved. —————— Our Boundary Waters were just opened for a type of mining with a 100% track record of pollution. However, Minnesota’s legislature and DNR have actions they can take to slow them down and prevent a mine. —————— Right now, the DNR can cancel Twin Metals’ permits. Support this by calling commissioner Sarah Strommen and expressing your opposition to the mines. State Legislators can introduce and pass legislation to ban mining in the area, call your MN House and Senate reps to express your support. —————— I am immensely disappointed, heartbroken, and angry with the MN republicans who supported this decision. May it keep you up at night, and may you never find peace in the nature you voted to destroy. Thank you to @senatortinasmith for fighting this decision tirelessly. —— (Photos are not mine, this reel features photos from the last 10 years of the Boundary Waters Photo Contest. The prospect of copper-nickel mining close to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (or BWCA) has divided the state. Supporters include business and labor groups that want the high-paying jobs and economic impact of a nearly $2 billion project. Opponents include environmental groups that warn of possible catastrophic water pollution in the state’s most beloved wilderness. The plans to start mining having gone back and forth under recent presidential administrations. Most recently, President Joe Biden enacted a 20-year ban on mining on 225,000 acres of the Superior National Forest. However, President-elect Donald Trump has said that he would reverse the ban and “turn the Iron Range into a mineral powerhouse like never before.” Trump could undo the ban administratively or Congress could reverse it. Additionally, Republican U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber has a bill not only to revoke the ban, but also return the mineral leases to Twin Metals Minnesota, the company that has proposed a mining site near Ely, Minnesota. Even if the mining ban is lifted, the process of getting state approvals and environmental reviews would take years. Bottom line: a potential mine is still uncertain and likely years away. #BWCA #boundarywaters 📝 by Dan Kraker, 📹 by Anne Guttridge

Today’s Senate decision to lift the 20-year federal ban on mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) is devastating. I can guarantee that not one of the 50 Yes votes have ever spent any time in the BWCA and realize what a rare and sacred place it is. PROTECT THE BOUNDARY WATERS 📣 The U.S. Senate voted to overturn the mining ban protecting the Boundary Waters. 1.1 million acres. The most visited wilderness canoe area in the country. They opened the door for sulfide-ore copper mining upstream from it. The kind that has never been done without polluting nearby water. If you’re angry, here’s what you can do 👇 Action 1: Call the Minnesota DNR. Tell them to cancel Twin Metals’ state mineral lease. Minnesota has the legal authority to act right now — without waiting for Congress. Commissioner Sarah Strommen: 651-259-5555 Main line: 651-296-6157 Tell them: exercise Minnesota’s authority, stand up against federal overreach, and protect the Boundary Waters. UPDATE: A resolution that would use the Congressional Review Act to overturn protections for the Boundary Waters, clearing the way for toxic copper mining in its headwaters has passed the House on Jan. 21, 2026. Please call your U.S. Senators and ask them to vote NO on Joint Resolution 140. The BWCA is the most-visited wilderness area in the U.S. It has about 165,000 visitors annually. It also has 20% of all the fresh water in the entire national forest system. The BWCA supports 17,000 jobs in northeastern Minnesota’s outdoor recreation economy. #exploremn #onlyinmn #boundarywaters #bwca #onlyinminnesota
