This is utterly heartbreaking, yet a sad reality of what marine life faces every single day. You can hear this unfortunate humpback struggling to breathe. She was one of the lucky ones—and was eventually cut loose. Entanglement specifically refers to the wrapping of lines, netting, or other materials of anthropogenic origin around the body of an animal. Bycatch refers to the unintentional capture of species such as small cetaceans in fishing nets. Worldwide, both entanglement and bycatch in fisheries operations pose a major risk for 86% of the world’s toothed whales, according to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. Entanglement is a pressing and longstanding threat to the wellbeing of cetaceans globally. Entanglement doesn’t only cause injury and distress in whales, and restrict life-sustaining day-to-day activities; whales can also be anchored in place by fishing gear such as crab and prawn traps and aquaculture gear, causing them to drown. Various forms of fishing gear such as gillnets, driftnets, traps, weirs, purse-seine nets, long-lines, trawls and others were implicated with causing entanglement that may lead to suffocation and death of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Globally, over 300,000 small cetaceans die each year due to entanglement in fishing gear 2. Several species are at high risk of extinction due to bycatch, including the vaquita in the Gulf of Mexico and Maui’s dolphins in New Zealand. Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are one of the most commonly entangled species of baleen whale and well known for entanglement in fishing gear around the world. For humpback whales, half of the individuals in some large whale populations are entangled at least once in their life, including 52-78% of humpbacks in southeast Alaska. #commercialfishing #bycatch 🎥 @captain.coleharrison reposted from @racingextinction

🚨🌊 THIS IS HOW THEY RELEASE WRONGFULLY FISHED SEA LIFE 🐟⚠️ One wrong catch. One life pulled from the deep by mistake. But what happens next can mean survival… or tragedy. 🎣 Accidental Bycatch: Turtles, sharks, rays, and protected species caught unintentionally 🧤 Careful Handling: Wet gloves, minimal contact, supporting the body properly ⏱ Fast Action: The less time out of water, the higher the survival rate 🛟 Safe Release: Gently guiding the animal back into moving water 🌊 Second Chance: Watching it swim away into the dark blue depths Responsible crews know — the ocean provides, but it must also be respected. Every careful release protects fragile ecosystems beneath the surface. Not every catch is meant to stay on deck. 💬 Should stricter rules be enforced to reduce bycatch worldwide? 👉 Follow @depthsofocean for more real ocean moments, survival stories, and deep-sea truths. 🎥 Video Credit: DM for credits/removal to the real owner. #oceanlife #bycatch #marinelife #sustainablefishing #darkoceans

Can you imagine being this close to nature’s top predator?😳 🎥@drone_dude_trystan captures a great white shark gliding past two surfers in San Diego. Despite being apex predators, shark populations face many threats. One of the biggest threats to great white sharks is bycatch – the incidental capture of non-target species by commercial fisheries. The good news is there are several ways you can help reduce bycatch: ✔️Educate yourself about which fisheries generate the most bycatch and avoid eating them. ✔️Support organisations that campaign to reduce bycatch. ✔️Reduce seafood from your diet And of course, don’t forget to #Take3fortheSea . . . . #take3forthesea #bycatch #shark #sharkweek

Life wasted at sea 💔 Because we are on the frontlines of industrial fishing, our crew witness the truth most never see: ⚠️ Entire lives thrown away as bycatch. ⚠️ Endangered species caught and killed. ⚠️ Oceans emptied, only to waste life in the name of profit. This is the hidden cost of eating fish. The most powerful — and effective — way to end it? Stop the demand. Stop eating fish. 🌊🐟 #SeaShepherd #Bycatch 📸 Vincent Chen / Sea Shepherd

⚠️🌊 THIS Is How Wrongfully Fished Sea Life Gets Released 😱🐟 The ocean gives… and sometimes humans take too much. Not all caught creatures are meant for the nets, and crews have a harsh responsibility to release them safely. 🐠 By-Catch in Action: Fish, crabs, and other marine life accidentally caught 🚢 Rapid Release: Tossed back into the sea to survive, often under brutal conditions 💀 Survival Odds: Cold, trauma, and stress make it a fight against the odds ⚓ Crew Responsibility: Every second counts to minimize casualties Even with care, the ocean shows no mercy. Releasing the wrongfully caught is a delicate balance between human error and nature’s will. 💬 Would you have the courage to handle this at sea? 🎥 Video Credit: DM for credits/removal to the real owner. . . . #bycatch #oceanlife #fishingethics #northsea #scaryocean

This Blue Shark REALLY wanted my GoPro Here you can see he wiggles to try to pass my hand and I actually have to gently redirect him off my GoPro at least 3 times before he finally gives up and moves on. For Pelagic species like blue sharks, who roam the open ocean desert, they can go a long time without eating and a long time without finding food, so when they finally encounter something floating in the deep they need to inspect it. He was more interested in our electronics and the white logo cirlce at the end of our fins, we put the white One Ocean Logos there on purpose because its better to have a sharks attention focused on the far end of an inanimate object like fins, rather than on our core or appendages. This is also part of the reason we keep small electronics generally on a pole, because sharks have a special electro-receptor sensory system called the ampullae of Lorenzini, so they tend to hone in on weak electrical output (like a sick fish) when in close proximity. Blue sharks are rare to encounter and, unfortunately, are becoming increasingly rare around the world. Sadly more than 20 million blue sharks are estimated to be killed every year as #ByCatch in the #seafood industry and for Shark Fin Soup. Out of every ten manta rays, around one displays signs of being ensnared in fishing and mooring lines, experiencing amputated fins and wings and bearing painful lacerations from hooks. You have the power to make a difference. ✔️Advocate for the removal of dangerous nets, moorings and fishing lines in your area, for example, shark nets! ✔️Educate yourself about which fisheries generate the most bycatch and avoid eating them, or stop eating seafood all together! ✔️Support organisations that campaign to reduce bycatch And don’t forget to #take3forthesea. 🎥mantatrust via uselessplastic (IG) #ocean #oceanlife #oceanlover #oceanview #oceanconservation #oceananimals #nature #naturephotography #naturelovers #naturelover #stingray #underwaterphotography #underwaterphotographer #take3forthesea #bycatch

Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) are built-in escape hatches in shrimp trawl nets that allow sea turtles to escape once inside of a net instead of drowning. Studies have shown they can reduce turtle deaths by up to 97%—but only if they are used properly and consistently. 🌍 Support sustainable seafood and demand better enforcement to keep these lifesaving devices in use. 📹 @noaa 🐢 #SeaTurtleBiologist #SeaTurtleFact #TEDsSaveTurtles #Bycatch #SustainableSeafood #SeaTurtleConservation
