Let’s integrate this rational function in 1 minute. The standard approach is to factorise the denominator and use partial fraction decomposition, which is not too bad. But factoring out the highest power of x instead of the lowest one actually leads to a clever substitution that simplifies the solution a great deal. Some food for thought: What characteristic of the polynomial in the denominator makes this substitution work? Can you generalize this? #math #calculus #integration #integral

Average vs Instantaneous: the calculus clash. Δy/Δx is used to calculate average rate of change over an interval. Geometrically, it is slope of a secant line between two points. dy/dx is used to represent infinitely small changes and to define instantaneous rate of change. Geometrically, it is slope of a tangent line at a single point. #calculus #derivativesnotation #mathreel #basicmathematics #mathvisualization #tangentlines

If you’ve taken calculus before, you might remember partial fractions feeling mechanical. But the real signal is in the structure! Polynomial over polynomial with a factorable denominator. Break it apart. Integrate what you already recognize. The “cover up” method makes it easy to integrate! #calculusrefresh #apcalculus #integrationtechniques #learnmath

∫ x cos(x) dx – Integration by Parts When you see a product of algebraic and trig functions, think integration by parts. Let u = x dv = \cos x \, dx Differentiate one. Integrate the other. Then apply the formula carefully. This is a core A-Level skill. #ALevelMaths #IntegrationByParts #Calculus #ExamTechnique #BradfieldTuition

Did you know there is a shortcut to integration by parts? It's called the tabular method. From calculus 2 class. Out of the two functions, pick the one that goes to 0 after taking its derivative a few times. In this case, the x^2 goes to 2x, then 2, then 0. Put it in the left column. Take its derivative on each line below it. Put the other function in the right column. Integrate that one down to the level of the 0 on the left column. Add + and - alternating on the left side of the left column. Multiply the results from the top left to the one lower right to it, while keeping the + and - signs. Those parts are your answer. Don't forget to add the "c" for an indefinite integral. #calculus #calc2 #mathtricks #integrationbyparts
