Hereโ€™s three ways our Held Birth Courses differ from hospital classes.. ๐Ÿ’ซPartner support and hands on practice of the techniques - you might be reading the books and listening to the podcasts, but is your partner? Make sure theyโ€™re prepared to support you on the big day! We practice the partner techniques in class so theyโ€™re confident in what they can do to help. ๐Ÿ’ซ Practical techniques for birth - this is one of the key differences, we have a big focus on building your toolkit for birth and learning how to support your body through the stages of labour. ๐Ÿ’ซEvidence based information on your options + choices that isnโ€™t influenced by hospital policy (which can sometimes be outdated). We talk about all your options and how to write a birth plan that works. No shade on hospital classes - Iโ€™ve been the midwife teaching them too! Nutrition is super important in the postnatal period, and unfortunately an area that is a bit neglected! โ My top tip - focus on nutrient dense snacks and ideally stock up your freezer in pregnancy! โ  You need approximately 500 calories extra calories per day when youโ€™re breastfeeding. That is quite a lot! Most women will find that they are hungrier when breastfeeding, which makes sense. Aim to have a balance of protein, carbohydrate and fat at each meal. Meat, vegetables, fruit, whole-grains like brown rice and oats are a great start. Making sure youโ€™re getting in enough fibre is also important. Unfortunately constipation is quite common in the postnatal period and upping the fibre and water intake is one of the first things we try.
