WHWool processing, Part 1.
Terms used in the reel:
Skirting: the process of taking out undesired parts of the fleece before washing
Second cuts: where the blades of the shearer went over the fleece a second time, resulting in shorter bits of fleece too small to process into yarn or felt
Kemp: hair or very wiry wool that will remain scratchy and doesn’t take dye very well. This is however a necessary component for the wool product Tweed.
Vegetable Matter (VM) : anything plant derived that ends up in the fleece. Hay, weeds, seeds, etc.
Belly wool: wool that grows on the sheeps belly. This is typically worn down so much it’s not included in wool processing but makes amazing mulch.
Primitive breed: an unimproved breed that retains a lot of its old fashioned traits such as growing some hair in the fleece.
