Measles spreads easily and can be deadly. The MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent measles, and it’s safe for everyone. Kids should get their first dose at 12 to 15 months, but infants as young as 6 months can be vaccinated, like if they’re traveling internationally or there’s a local outbreak. Adults who haven’t been vaccinated or aren’t sure should contact their doctor. MMR vaccines may be available from doctor’s offices, local health departments, or many pharmacies.

Measles is the most contagious vaccine-preventable virus we know. If one infected

Measles is back in California — and that should concern all of us. Measles is the most contagious vaccine-preventable virus we know. If one infected person walks into a room, up to 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people in that space can become infected. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after someone coughs or sneezes. This isn’t just a rash. Measles can cause: • High fevers (often 104°F or higher) • Pneumonia • Brain inflammation (encephalitis) • Permanent neurologic damage • Death Before widespread vaccination, measles infected millions of Americans annually and killed hundreds of children each year. The MMR vaccine changed that. After universal vaccination, cases dropped by more than 99%. But measles requires very high community immunity — around 95% — to prevent outbreaks. When vaccination rates dip, outbreaks follow. That’s epidemiology, not politics. From a physician’s perspective, this isn’t abstract. Outbreaks strain local health departments, require contact tracing, isolation protocols, and divert already limited public health resources. Measles is preventable. When we see it return, it’s a signal — not that the vaccine failed, but that coverage gaps exist. Viruses exploit gaps. Public health works when we close them.

Utah measles cases are on the rise. As of March 24th (My birthday btw) there are 486 cases. Yes, I checked the Utah Health Department measles tracker as I wrapped up a beautiful day of birthday celebrations and sweet messages from people I love. I know that UDOH updates its tracker on Tuesdays. I had to check. And it broke my heart to see the cases haven’t slowed. In fact, 486 is a significant increase since my last measles post, and frankly it’s scary to me as I know the measles took me down in late May of my 7th grade year. May. It’s only March! So, to any adult who argues, “This only a 3 day disease.” WRONG! Or, “Kids are tough!” Well, I’m here to warn you this disease is tougher and in my case the symptoms stayed with me long after the high fever, internal and external rash, and vomiting faded. Please don’t gamble with a child’s health. There is a way to save children from contracting the measles. According to the CDC, two doses of the MMR are 97% effective at protecting against the measles. May God watch over and protect any child who is suffering tonight. #utah #measlesoutbreak

Measles is spreading again in the United States. Outbreaks have already been reported in 26 states, with more than 1,000 cases in the first two months of the year. Measles spreads quickly when vaccination rates fall, which is why about 95% of people need to be vaccinated to stop it. If you’re a parent, please make sure your children are vaccinated. It protects your family and the people around you.
