Carmina Burana is probably the most recognized piece of classical music on the planet. And almost no one knows the face of the man who wrote it. Carl Orff composed the cantata in 1936, setting 24 medieval poems from the 13th century. The texts are neither sacred nor solemn — they speak of drunkenness, lust, gambling, and the blind cruelty of fate. Orff took that raw, profane energy and built something that sounds as if it existed before music itself.

After the premiere in Frankfurt in 1937, Orff told his publisher: "Everything I have written before can be destroyed. With Carmina Burana, my work begins." This isn't arrogance. It's the recognition of someone who found the one thing that was entirely his own. The structure is deceptively simple: rhythmic repetition, modal harmonies, text that is declaimed more than sung. No development in the symphonic sense. Only an accumulation of force. That's why it works in trailers, stadiums, and memes — the impact is immediate and needs no context.

In 1980, at age 84, Orff attended Riccardo Muti's rehearsal with the Berlin Philharmonic. He was so moved that he called it "a second premiere." The video opens and closes on the same face — solemn, still, thick glasses in black and white. It mirrors the circular structure of the work itself. "O Fortuna" begins and ends with the same text, the same melody. The Wheel of Fortune turns and returns to where it started.
