You probably understand less than you think. That is the illusion of explanatory depth. We mistake familiarity for understanding, then build strong opinions on top of weak foundations. Here is the fix: before you feel certain, try to explain it simply. If you cannot, you do not understand it yet.

"They must be right. There are four of them and one of me." A classic demonstration of social psychologist Solomon Asch's Conformity Line Experiment. In these experiments, groups of participants were asked to match the length of lines on cards - the solutions being obvious. But each group consisted of one genuine participant, while the rest of the group was secretly instructed to provide the wrong answer. On average, one-third of the genuine participants conformed to the group and agreed with an obviously wrong answer. In control studies where there were no secret instructions or peer pressure, the genuine participants gave a wrong answer less than 1% of the time. It's surprisingly easy for individuals to conform to false group think, even when the truth is obvious. How many fringe political beliefs arise out of this social phenomenon? Probably too many.

There is one question that has been used by the greatest thinkers in history to develop sharper minds. It takes ten seconds to ask. And most parents have never heard of it. • How do you know that? • Four words. The foundation of what philosophers call the Socratic method — developed two thousand years ago, still used in the world’s best universities today, and almost entirely absent from mainstream schooling. • When a child makes a claim — about anything, a fact they read online, an opinion they have formed — and you ask them “how do you know that?” something remarkable happens. They have to stop. They have to trace their thinking back to its source. They have to ask themselves — is this actually true, or did I just absorb it? • That process of interrogating your own thinking is the foundation of critical thought. And it is not something that develops naturally. It has to be prompted. Repeatedly. Until it becomes a habit. • Research in cognitive development shows that students regularly asked to justify their reasoning demonstrate significantly stronger analytical thinking over time. They become harder to mislead. They become more intellectually confident. • You do not need a classroom to do this. You need a dinner table and four words. • 💬 Have you ever tried this with your child? What happened? Descartes believed we are made of two fundamentally different substances The body, extended in space and governed by physical laws. The mind, thinking, conscious, and not bound by those laws. This is Cartesian dualism, the idea that mind and body are distinct yet mysteriously connected. It explains why we can imagine ourselves without a body but never without a mind. For Descartes, the “I” that thinks is the truest self. The body may age, weaken, or break but the mind, in its essence, remains. Two worlds, inseparable, yet forever different in nature. #philosophers #philosophy #philosophical

The quality of your thinking is directly linked to the quality of your questions. Critical questioning (thanks Socrates) is a powerful technique that can help you develop your analytical skills and broaden your perspectives. As Socrates famously said, “I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.” Through the art of questioning, we can stimulate our curiosity and challenge our assumptions to arrive at more informed conclusions. Here are 3 types of Questions: 1️⃣ CLARIFICATION QUESTIONS These seek to ensure that everyone involved in a conversation is on the same page. For example: –“What do you mean by X?” –“Can you give me an example?” 2️⃣ REASON & EVIDENCE QUESTIONS These are designed to dig deeper into someone’s thought process and the evidence they’re using to support their claims. Examples: –“What led you to that perspective?” –“What other information might we need to consider?” 3️⃣ IMPLICATION QUESTIONS These examine the potential consequences of certain actions or decisions, helping us think more holistically about complex problems and identify possible unintended consequences. Examples: –“What effect would that have if that happened?” –“What’s an alternative solution we could consider?” So don’t settle for surface-level conversations - challenge yourself and others to think more deeply by asking curious critical questions. Do you have a go-to question you like to ask? #criticalthinking #socraticquestioning #curiousquestions #communicationskills

There are so many valuable lessons I have learnt in my role as a Life Design Fellow at Stanford. But this particular lens to decode any problem is hands down one of my most go to! Usually, when I am feeling deeply stuck, I am wrestling with a problem that looks like one of these three. Understanding which one creates a way forward to solving it. Hope this helps you too! Both critical thinking and strategic thinking are important skills. Yes there is some overlap when they are used, but typically critical thinking is used more often in operational, in the moment work. Whereas strategic thinking is used in planning for the future. Both skillsets are worth developing, and bringing people to them table who excel at either one of them can add real value. If you're looking to improve your own value in your organisation, developing critical thinking and strategic thinking is highly sought after.

The distance between deciding and doing by Derek Sivers. The distance between deciding and doing is the single most reliable predictor of whether your lite will be extraordinary or ordinary. Not talent, not circumstances, not even the quality of your decisions-but how quickly you collapse the space between intention and reality. Think of this gap as a kind of friction coefficient on your existence: the smaller it is, the more of your internal force actually translates into external motion. When you can move from “I should do this” to physically doing it within hours instead of weeks, you’re not just accomplishing more-you’re operating in a fundamentally different mode of being where your thoughts have immediate consequences in the world, where your inner life and outer life are in a constant, tight, conversation. #productivity #failure #selfhelp

Are there any 1 percenters on my page? Can you make the 3 yellow dots disappear for 10 seconds? I can't confirm the accuracy of the test but apparently it's to determine whether or not you have adhd. We're just going to make it a challenge today. I found this test thanks to eChalk on Youtube and Prof. AMX® on TikTok. I hope you like these little brain tests and challenges!
