FOWhen a caseworker comes to visit, they often are checking to make sure the home is still in compliance with county standards, and they are checking on the well-being of the child.
It’s great to prepare ahead of time with the child and see if there is anything they want to share.
When the worker arrives, consider sharing strengths and building up the child. It’s also important to talk as a group and WITH the child, rather than just talking ABOUT them like they aren’t even there. 💛 and yes, even little kids can pick up on things we are talking about… don’t assume it’s all going over their head.
As a new foster parent, I remember feeling nervous, wasn’t really sure what to share, and probably was overly talkative. It’s good to leave pauses and spaces and engage the child in the conversation.
Also, at the beginning, it’s important to remember the child is in crisis. While getting referrals for therapy and support is important to do early on, it’s also important to consider that this is a child in transition. You likely will see some regressions or changes in behaviors over the first few weeks and months. You can consider discussing your concerns during team meetings or privately with the worker.
