One of the most fascinating and shocking features of medieval castles was the garderobe (latrine) system. Toilets were often built directly into the thick stone walls, with waste dropping straight outside the building, usually down the castle walls or into the moat area.
There was no plumbing, no sewage system, and no modern sanitation. Life inside meant dealing with strong smells and very real hygiene challenges every single day.
In some castles, the openings were positioned so close to the ground below that people walking past weren’t always as “safe” as they thought…

VIHowl’s Moving Castle (2004), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, follows the story of Sophie, a hat maker who is cursed by a witch and turned into an old woman. Through her quest to return to her former self she meets Howl, a wizard who refuses to fight for the king during wartime. Eventually through finding love and compassion both Sophie and Howl’s curse are broken, and they live happily with their misfit family.
The film has strong anti war themes throughout. Mainly due to Miyazaki’s disapproval of the United States invasion of Iraq that led to the Iraq War. Another theme is the castle itself, it represents Howl’s heart. The castle is shown as messy and cluttered until Howl accepts love into his heart and the castle becomes a place suitable for people to live.
Overall, Howl’s Moving Castle is a film about the importance of compassion and loving each other, even throughout the midst of struggle.
