Two things you NEED to know when learning how to knit in the round on circular needles: First - choose the correct needle length! A bit too short is better than a bit too long. For most adult hats, 16 inches is a good length. For top down sweaters with a crew neck, I like 12 inches and for cuff down socks, 9 inches. Second - make sure your cast on row is not twisted before you join to work in the round! #knitting #knittingintheround #circularneedles

When I was teaching in New York, I got a lot of questions about picking up around gussets (and I decided to develop a class on it too, so stand by!) In the interim, I thought I’d pop this up here again, where I show picking up extra stitches. In this reel, I have stitches held on my spare needle and then I’ve used the backwards loop method to cast on the same number of stitches. This is similar to what you’d see for an underarm. When I go back to pick up from that cast-on, I’ll lose a stitch because I’m going to be knitting in the opposite direction. So I am picking up and knitting an extra stitch at either end of the cast-on to help close the gaps and bring my stitch count back up. Later I can always decrease that extra stitch out if I want. To pick up and knit that extra stitch on either end, I’ve used the purl bump of the stitch right next to the cast-on. If I were to use a leg of the stitch, it would tend to stretch out and leave a hole, but a lifted increase is much lower profile and works well as a transition here. Then I’m picking up one stitch at the top of each column of Vs in the cast-on. To completely hide that cast-on, I’m going through the exact center of the stitch which means I’m basically creating a two strand purl bump from the cast-on row. Finally I work the stitches off the spare needle, and I’m ready to knit in the round! Was this helpful? Let me know in the comments - I love to hear from you 🧡🧶 . Sending out calm, peace, and kindness to you all. Hold your dear ones close 🐈‍⬛ 💙🌈 🕊️ . . . #knittips #knittingtips #knittingtutorials

A great technique from @pattyjlyons to help you in your knitting. This one could be a game changer. BOOKMARK IT - AHHH I forgot a decrease. Not going to lie - this happens to me all the time when doing sweater shaping. I put in my decrease as the start of the row, but by the time I’m at the end of the row, I forget. NOW, to avoid that, I use a vertical marking thread at the start of the row, put in my decrease, and then immediately put in a locking stitch marker at the end of the row where I’m supposed ot put in the decrease. This wakes me up. But . . . there are times when you buzz right past a decrease. No stress, just drop and pop! Drop down and pop in the fix.

This video demonstrates how to work the stitch immediately before starting the pick-up stitches for the sleeve, and how to work the stitch immediately after completing the pick-up stitches. This method is similar to techniques used to eliminate jogs in short rows or stranded knitting, helping to create a smoother and more continuous fabric transition.

How to cast-on a flexible & lose edge in knitting 🧶 Double needle cast on, or two-needle cast on, involves holding two knitting needles together as one while casting on stitches to create a loose, elastic, and flexible edge. It is primarily used to prevent a tight, non-stretchy foundation row, making it ideal for sock cuffs, hats, and lace projects. I also skip the slip knot which creates a cleaner edge and prevents a hard bump in the seam. #knittingtutorial #howtoknit #knittingtechniques #longtailmethod #knitterofinstagram

Here’s what actually improves your knitting 👇 The Right Lifted Increase (RLI) is an increase method known since the late 19th–early 20th century A new stitch is created by lifting a stitch from the row below and knitting into it, resulting in a clean, right-leaning increase This method turns one stitch into two while remaining almost invisible in the fabric, making it ideal when you want structure without visual noise There is no single author credited with this technique, but it was widely popularized by influential knitters such as Elizabeth Zimmermann The counterpart, the Left Lifted Increase (LLI), is worked by lifting the stitch from the row below the previously worked stitch, creating a left-leaning increase that mirrors the RLI. Have you ever used this increase?
