They say a garden takes 3 years to really come into its own, but I can already see so much magic happening. . All plants came from @theodorepayne and @sunsetblvdnursery. Did you know prickly pear cacti grow on Vancouver Island? This is crazy because the Pacific Northwest is a rainforest. Cactus roots need oxygen and fast drainage, which is why sandy or rocky soils work so well. The plant stores water in its pads and uses a special form of photosynthesis called CAM that lets it conserve moisture. It's roots are shallow and have adapted to uptake water fast. They need constant access to oxygen. This plant is super sensitive to anoxia!
