From the moment we landed in Java, I knew this journey would hit different. Malang felt like the perfect introduction to Java, a mix of calm streets and local life, well needed before the 4 upcoming sleepless night. One of the most unforgettable experiences was visiting the colorful village (Kampung Warna-Warni). Every street was painted in vibrant colors, like a living rainbow. But what truly stayed with me? The people. They weren’t used to seeing travelers like us, and at almost every step, someone would smile, stop us, and ask for a picture 🥹 Then came Tumpak Sewu and nothing could’ve prepared me for that. We hiked down into a hidden jungle, surrounded by not just one, but hundreds of waterfalls cascading all around us. The descent was intense, slippery, muddy but worth every sratch. And then, the highlights of Java : Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen 🔥 Both nights started the same : waking up at 11PM, exhausted but excited to realize one of my dream : reaching the crater’s blue flames ; a science project I worked on in college, and since this day, Kawah Ijen was an obsession. Anyways, nothing would have gotten us out of bed, except chasing volcanoes 🌋 We hiked in the dark, under the stars, just to reach the summit right in time for sunrise watching the sky slowly light up over surreal landscapes. Mount Bromo looked like something from another planet, it was vast, smoky, I will never forget the crater’s boiling sound. But Kawah Ijen… that was an experience on another level. We hiked in the middle of the night to witness the rare blue flames, a natural phenomenon caused by sulfuric gases igniting as they come into contact with oxygen. These electric blue flames only appear in complete darkness, which means you have to hike fast to reach them before sunrise. The crater itself holds one of the most toxic lakes on Earth, with a pH close to 0.2. The air is filled with sulfuric gases, so wearing a mask is a must. And somehow, in the middle of all that, we still dared to dip our fingers in for a second, just for the story (don’t try this 😅) Java challenged us, surprised us, and completely blew us away with it’s raw beauty, would do it again a hundred times ✨

Tumpak Sewu waterfall (steep wet hike down, take water shoes, super worth it!) Kabut Pelangi waterfall (Easy 5 min hike to the viewpoint. If you want to go down into the valley to the falls it’s probs another 30 mins) Kawah Ijen hike + sulfur lake + blue fire (I really don’t recommend the blue fire part. Extreme overtourism and I’d say almost dangerous. Save this Ultimate 1 Week Java Itinerary and make sure to follow @megsandpat for more travel itineraries! In August 2023 we were able to explore the island of Java in Indonesia. We started in Bali and took the ferry over and to Banyuwangi, and we ended the trip in Yogyakarta. You can do the trip in either direction, depends on your plans. We did a mix of travel that included scooter rentals, private drivers and trains. Itinerary Day 1: Bali Island to Banyuwangi in East Java Day 2: Ijen morning hike and drive to Tumpak Sewu Day 3: Explore waterfalls- Tumpak Sewu, Madakaripura and Coban Sriti, then drive to Probolinggo Day 4: Sunrise hike of Mount Bromo then transfer to Borobudur Day 5: Explore Borobudur temple Day 6: Yogyakarta and Prambanan temple Day 7: Yogyakarta and fly out Getting to Java from Bali From Bali Island it is quite easy to get to Java. You can get a Grab (taxi) from Canggu to the ferry for about 600,000 IDR and it takes about 3.5 hours. There is no public transportation for this route. The ferries leave every 30 minutes from the pier, so you do not need to prebook your ticket. The cost of the ferry is really cheap, 18,000 IDR. NOTE: you do need to buy your ferry ticket at a stall before the terminal. Your driver should know this, but you will also see little ticket stalls prior to the ferry. The ferry takes about 1.5hrs.
