BEHow to cheat at making plates on the pottery wheel!
The secret is using a slab rather than worrying about centering the clay and using calipers and all the jazz. That would totally work and make amazing plates! But I know that centering clay out thin enough to be a plate then trimming and blah blah blah. It’s not for me haha!
I’m in the process of making a set of 8 settings with these plates and this technique is perfect to get them all the same size and shape without needing to measure every time. Just use the same size bats!
Excited to show the process of this set because they will all be hand painted with botanical and traditional designs. SO FUN.

CH*Slab/Wheel Plate Tutorial*
It’s been a while since I’ve done any plates but it’s time for me to make some custom dinnerware sets so I’m back at it again!! 🍽️
Answers to common questions I get:
•This clay is Laguna #50, it’s super speckled. I also recommend Laguna Speckled Buff if you want a warmer clay. Firm clays work best for this method. @lagunaclay
•The slab is 1/4 inch thick and I use a Shimpo mini tabletop slab roller to make the slab.
•I personally don’t trim or attach a foot. I just wait until the plates are at a firm leather hard, pop them off the bat and then I smoothen them out with a rubber rib!

CII just finished the final piece in my new organic shaped, vegetable-inspired blate set — each one hand-built, silkscreened, painted, and glazed in rich seasonal tones. The trio features three complementary shades: a soft cream for the beet plate, light green for the carrot plate, and a deep green for the tomato plate — all finished with a distressed gold glaze around the rim.
I’ve had a lot of questions about the silkscreens I’ve been using, and just learned they’ve been discontinued — which means this set (and any future fruit version) will be truly limited.
I’ll be taking a short break soon but will circle back to these for a midsummer launch. A soft pink fruit version is also in the works. 🫶

MEDesigner Noam Rosenberg turns the most ordinary objects into striking patterns for his handmade ceramic plates. Over time, he has experimented with bubble wrap, crocheted doilies, leaves, lace fabrics and flowers, pressing their textures into clay to reveal unexpected beauty.
One of his latest explorations began with a simple question: what looks like a rolling pin, but leaves a completely different mark? The answer was a corn cob. By rolling it across clay, cutting the slabs and shaping them into plates, he discovered a texture that feels both playful and perfectly rhythmic. He rolled it, cut it and transformed it into ceramics.
It’s a reminder that inspiration is often hiding in plain sight. What everyday object would you use to create a texture?
