CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the world's largest particle physics laboratory, dedicated to probing the fundamental structure of matter and the basic laws of nature. Its most famous creation is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) , a 27-kilometer ring that accelerates particles to near the speed of light for high-energy collisions. These experiments led to the groundbreaking 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson, a key particle in the Standard Model of physics which gives mass to other elementary particles. Beyond particle accelerators, CERN's computing needs spurred the invention of the World Wide Web in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee to facilitate information sharing among scientists.
