LA👇 Here’s what’s really going on…
We all want to create characters that feel like real people, right?
But sometimes, while aiming for realism, we accidentally strip away the things that make our characters memorable.
Here are some ways that can happen: 😬
❌ Inconsistent inner dialogue
One scene, they’re sarcastic and bold. The next? Thoughtful and analytical. You may think that’s “flexibility,” but really, it’s you losing their voice. Readers can’t connect to a character whose perspective feels like a grab bag of traits.
❌ Putting too much focus on quirks
She loves coffee, hates Mondays, and always talks to her plants. Fun details? Sure. But quirks don’t equal depth, and they won’t make your character stick in readers’ minds. Don’t forget the emotional core.
❌ Every reaction feels random
He laughs one minute, lashes out the next, and cries without warning. Real people can be unpredictable, but without clear inner motivation, it just feels messy and confusing on the page.
🛠️ What to do instead:
1️⃣ Give your character a distinct lens
How do they see the world? Optimistically? Cynically? Through humor? Anchor every thought and decision to that worldview.
2️⃣ Focus on their why
What core belief or fear drives their actions? Readers connect when they understand the motivation beneath the surface.
3️⃣ Balance quirks with complexity
A plant obsession is fine—but readers need to know how she feels about love, failure, and her place in the world.

LA⚠️ Avoid introducing characters like this ⚠️
The BIGGEST mistake writers make when introducing characters is that they *tell* through info dumping rather than *showing* through action.
Here are 3 ways to introduce your characters WITHOUT info-dumping:
1️⃣ Don’t list facts about your character
❌ Don’t do: “Sarah was a 28-year-old journalist with long brown hair and green eyes. She was stubborn, career-driven, and had trust issues from her parents’ divorce when she was twelve.”
✅ Instead, do: “Sarah drummed her fingers against her desk, refreshing her inbox for the tenth time. This story could make her career—if her source would just respond. She ignored her mother’s third call of the day.”
2️⃣ Show personality through action
❌ Don’t do: “James was the kind of person who always helped others. He was generous and kind, especially to animals. He volunteered at the shelter every weekend.”
✅ Instead, do: “James was already late for work when he spotted the limping dog. He sighed, checking his watch—his boss would kill him—but he was already pulling over, reaching for the emergency treats he kept in his glove compartment.”
3️⃣ Let dialogue reveal character
❌ Don’t do: “Maya was confident and outspoken. She never backed down from a challenge and always stood up for what she believed in.”
✅ Instead, do: “That’s not actually what happened,” Maya cut in, ignoring her friend’s warning look. The entire boardroom turned to stare at her. She straightened her spine. “And I have the receipts to prove it.”
Remember: Your readers are smart! Let them discover who your characters are through their actions, choices, and dialogue. 💫
