You don’t need fancy equipment to train your dog. A simple cardboard box can help build confidence, improve body awareness, and give you the chance to practice marking “yes” the moment your dog makes the right choice. #mccanndogs #puppytrainingtips #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingtools #dogsocialization

A question we’re often asked is, “Can I give my dog a toy while they’re on place?” The answer: yes! But not every toy is a good option. Avoid balls or stuffed toys that your dog can “accidentally” drop because that usually turns into breaking place to chase it. Instead, choose something that encourages calm, stationary engagement, like chewing or licking. Some of our favorites: • Split antlers • Himalayan dog chews • Indestructibones by Bullet Proof Pet Products (looks odd, but the heavy chewers love them!) • Peanut butter & treats stuffed KONGs (freeze for longer-lasting fun) • Lick mats with peanut butter, pumpkin purée, or wet dog food These help your dog stay occupied, relaxed, and successful on place. As always, supervise your pup anytime they’re enjoying a chew or enrichment toy. #DogTrainingTips #PlaceCommand #CalmDog #DogEnrichment #SettleOnPlace #DogBehavior #DogTrainingLife #StructuredDogs #MentalStimulation #DogOwnersOfInstagram #K9AdvantEDGE #MichiganDogs

Why does your dog grab a toy when you come home? Not to show you. To regulate himself. Your arrival creates a surge of emotion. The toy helps organize that energy. Without an outlet, the same surge becomes jumping, mouthing, chaos. Small behaviors often have deep functions. Understanding them changes training completely. How to Train your puppy. Training a puppy to wait before eating is a fundamental exercise in building impulse control and establishing you as the leader of the “pack.” The process relies on a technique called positive reinforcement, where the food bowl itself becomes the reward for calm behavior rather than the source of excitement. By consistently using a “Release Word” (like “Okay!”), you teach your puppy that they only get what they want by being patient and listening to your command. Step-by-Step “Wait” Protocol 1. Prepare the Bowl: Hold the food bowl at chest level while your puppy is in a sitting position. 2. The Slow Lower: Slowly begin to lower the bowl toward the floor. 3. The “Reset”: If the puppy breaks the sit or lunges for the bowl, immediately lift the bowl back up out of reach and say “Ah-ah” or “Oops.” 4. Wait for Calm: Wait for the puppy to sit back down and make eye contact with you. 5. The Floor Touch: Repeat the lowering process until the bowl is on the floor and the puppy remains still. 6. The Release: Once the bowl is down and the puppy is waiting, give your release command (“Okay!”) and point to the food. #puppytraining #dogobedience #impulsecontrol #puppylife
