Did you know this pyramid appears to move with the sun? ☀️🐍 On the equinoxes, the setting sun casts 7 triangular shadows on El Castillo’s staircase at Chichen Itza—forming the coils of the feathered serpent, Kukulkan. As the light shifts, the serpent appears to slither down the pyramid toward the carved head below. This isn’t just clever engineering—it’s esoteric wisdom and sacred science. The Maya built this cosmic clock to mark the return of Kukulkan, symbolizing renewal, balance, and the union of heaven and earth and return to source. Ready to explore ancient mysteries? Here’s the secret 🤫⬇️ But first follow @across_continentss for more travel adventures😍 When you clap in front of the pyramid, the sound reflects off the limestone steps and creates an echo that mimics the call of the sacred quetzal bird. The staircase design actually amplifies and sharpens the sound, which is why you hear that continuous chirp-like effect. 🫣 We were so bad at it. But guides know exactly where to stand and how to clap to make it sound perfect. Ancient Mayan acoustics are really impressive. Crazy to think how they constructed it all so long ago. ♥️ We’ll post more about our recent trip to Mexico soon, so follow along, it’s gonna be fun 🔥 🚘 We had lots of adventures while exploring almost the whole Yucatan peninsula, and we can’t wait to share it with you! ✈️ If you have any questions, we’re always happy to answer in the comments or DMs. Chichen Itza Mexico | Mayan Ruins | Things to Do Near Cancun | Yucatán Travel | Mexico Travel Guide | Chichen Itza Echo

The impressive acoustic effect in front of the Temple in Chichén Itzá. When you clap in front of a slope, the sound goes to the top. But if there is a cavity or hollow chamber at the top, as in this case of the Temple at the Pyramid of Kulkulkán, also known as El Castillo, the sound returns. What intrigues people who know the place most is that the sound produced by the echo resembles the sound emitted by Quetzal, a majestic bird adored by the Mayans as a “God of the Air”. There are indications that the effect wasn’t created by chance, and even acoustics and bird experts agree. In addition to this acoustic intelligence, the construction demonstrates deep knowledge of mathematics, geometry and astronomy that the Mayans possessed. The Mayans observed in detail the behavior of the seasons, the variations of the trajectories of the Sun and the stars, and printed various accurate information about these insights into the structure of buildings. For example, this pyramid has 4 stairs of 91 steps, and an upper step towards the altar, adding 365 steps - one for each day of the year. An acoustics expert named Nico Declercq also noticed that the height and spacing of the pyramid’s steps create an acoustic filter that emphasizes some sound frequencies while suppressing others, causing people’s steps to when they went up they sounded a lot like rain falling in a bucket of water. The God of Rain played an important role in Mayan Culture, so that also can’t be a coincidence. During the Equinox, the shadow of the platforms is projected onto the stairs in the form of a snake. As the sun advances, this snake seems to be going downward to Earth. This represents the descent of the God Kukulkán (“Featured Serpent”), symbolizing the beginning of the sowing and harvesting seasons. We can say that Chichén Itzá is one of the most beautiful places on the planet and its charm and magic infect people of all ages. A real culture class in the Mayan civilization. Chichen Itza, located in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is one of the most famous ancient Mayan cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established around the 5th century CE, it became a major center of Mayan civilization and reflects a blend of Mayan and Toltec influences. Its name means “At the Mouth of the Well of the Itza,” referencing the nearby cenotes (natural sinkholes) that were vital to the city’s water supply and used in ritual ceremonies. The most iconic structure at Chichen Itza is the Temple of Kukulcan, also known as “El Castillo,” a massive step pyramid dedicated to the feathered serpent deity Kukulcan. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, shadows cast on the pyramid create the illusion of a serpent slithering down its steps, a phenomenon that highlights the Mayans’ advanced understanding of astronomy and architecture. Other notable sites include the Great Ball Court, used for the ceremonial Mesoamerican ballgame, and the Temple of the Warriors, lined with carved columns depicting warriors. Chichen Itza was an influential political, economic, and religious center until its decline in the 13th century. Today, it is celebrated for its architectural achievements and cultural legacy, drawing millions of visitors each year who are fascinated by its history and the precision of its ancient structures. . ©️🎥 FollowAll-w5 . #ancient #mexico #mesopotamia #history #archeology #pyramids #travel #ruins #ancientruins

One mistake most tourists make when they visit Chichen Itza 👇 Save this post for your Mexico itinerary 💾 and follow us for more backpacking tips 🎒👇  @worldwidestepperss Chichen Itza attracts 2 million tourists per year and one of the top tourist destinations in the world, it gets super busy at certain times of the day. Visiting here at the wrong time will catch you in the ruins rush hour, where you’ll be in the mix with tons of tourists day tripping from Cancun arrive on huge tour buses 🚌 But…if you arrive too late, you will melt in the Mexican midday heat - trust me, this is not what you want to be caught up in! 🫠 So when is best to visit and how do you do it? 🤔 Best time to visit is for opening, Chichen Itza opens their doors at 8am, we recommend arriving just before to get refreshed and ready to enter. There’s food, drinks and coffee at the entrance. How do you get there so early? This is why we suggest to stay in Valladolid, only a 45 minute transfer allowing you can get there before opening! We took the “Transporte Colectivo (Chichen Itza Y Piste)” from Valladolid and it was simple and very affordable 🚐 Staying in Valladolid allows you to visit Chichen Itza early, and leave before the midday heat really hits ☀️ If you also plan to visit the local cenote “Il Kil” after Chichen Itza, you’ll get there before most of the tours 🏊‍♂️ If you find this post helpful and want to hear more backpacking tips, give us a follow🎒👇  @worldwidestepperss #chichenitza #valladolid #mexico #travelmexico #backpackinglatinamerica #backpackingsouthamerica #travelcouple

😭🥹Expectations VS Reality The Chichen Itza Edition . Don’t get me wrong, Chichen Itza is a beautiful place and maybe the most famous Mayan Ruins in the world (not the best one tho in my opinion..😉) . But sometimes the expectations and the weather are not on our side.. Especially in a tropical place like Mexico😅 . So at least let’s laugh about it 🤣🤣 . To be honest as a huge history and archaeology fan I was super excited to visit the most famous Myan pyramid in the world🥹 so this weather just got me a bit disappointed, but what can we do?😆 . It is a part of the game.. Anyone can relate? Have you been disappointed by a place you’ve dreamed of visiting for years? ☺️ .
