Building a chick brooder doesn’t have to be expensive! 🐣💡 I made this DIY brooder using a 27-gallon storage container, hardware cloth, and zip ties—super budget-friendly and easy to put together! It’s a great alternative to store-bought brooders and provides plenty of space for growing chicks. ✅ Why I love this setup: ✔️ Affordable—costs way less than pre-made brooders ✔️ Secure—keeps chicks safe while allowing airflow ✔️ Simple to clean and modify as chicks grow 🐥 How much space do chicks need? (There’s no one right answer here, so let me know how much space you give your chicks!) ➡️ 0-4 weeks: At least ½ sq. ft. per chick ➡️ 4-8 weeks: At least 1 sq. ft. per chick ➡️ 8+ weeks: At least 2-3 sq. ft. per chick before moving to the coop 🐥 Tip: Make sure to cover the top! Chicks start testing their wings sooner than you think. Would you try this DIY brooder? Most new chicken keepers don’t know this, but the sound of your brooder tells you almost everything. If you ever hear one chick making a sharp, nonstop peeping sound while the others are quiet… that’s your first red flag something isn’t right. Happy chicks make soft, gentle chirps while they eat & explore. A loud, repetitive peep usually means distress but it’s not always for the same reason. The first thing to rule out is temperature. If chicks are too cold, they huddle tightly under the heat source. If they’re too hot, they spread far away from it, panting or holding their wings out. A well-balanced brooder has chicks spread comfortably, eating, scratching, & resting in small groups. The next thing I always check is pasty butt. A blocked vent (where they poop from) can make a chick feel uncomfortable or distressed, so make sure the vent area is clean & clear. But if the temperature is right, & the vent looks normal, & you still hear one peeping loudly over & over, that’s when I check the crop. In my video, I show you exactly what this looks like as one chick is making the constant noise, wandering, not eating, with an empty crop while all the others are busy foraging. This often means the chick hasn’t worked out how to eat yet, & it needs a little extra help. I also show how I gently feed them tiny sips of egg yolk mixed with a small dash of Avi-Vital, slowly & carefully until the crop starts to fill & they get stronger. Most learn to eat on their own within a few days but some can take up to a week. One more thing to know is at night, when the lights go off or the sun sets, chicks will complain for about 10 minutes. That part is normal. They settle once they feel safe & warm. But ☝️ a chick that continues peeping long after the others have settled? That’s the one you need to check. Follow along if you like these simple, beginner-friendly tips that actually help you understand what's going on with your chicks & what to do 🙂 #happychickens #chickens #chickenlove #chickencare #chickensofinstagram #petchickens #petchicken #petchickensofinstagram #chickensofinstagram🐔 #chickensofinsta #chickensofig #chickensaspets #chickenmomma #backyardchicken

I can’t stand it when the chicks kick shavings into their waterers! Especially when we’re at work all day, we usually only check on them a few times a day and it’s the worst realizing they haven’t had clean water all day. Using pine pellets has been our best finding for freshening up the brooders. I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve raised chicks in brooders, but this is our first time using pellets. Although the pellets don’t go as far as a bag of shavings, the pellets have been worth it for us. And I’ll still use some shavings under the heat lamp, away from the waterers. Especially for the less messy, eggs layers. What are some tips you’ve learned when raising chicks? ⬇️ #brooder #chicks #meatchicks #broilers #egglayers #backyardchickens #homestead #homesteading #growyourownfood #workingmom

This brooder box has changed the chick game for me! It was big enough for our 17 babies with room to spare, though now we’re down to 10 babies after some already went to their new home! Since we got our chicks, all of the Brahmas were getting picked on. I’m not sure why it was only them, but I was able to put the divider in, and they’re all healing up! Unfortunately, once the pecking starts and the girls see red, they’ll keep pecking until any wounded spots heal. Honestly, really grateful to my yesterday self for thinking ahead for my today self on the divider 🙌🏼 #chickens #springchicks #babychicks #backyardchickens

You don’t need anything fancy to start raising chicks 🐣 A big cardboard box works just fine for a brooder. We used a box and then a pack n play at first 😂 and guess what? It worked! Start simple. Upgrade when you’re ready. The chickens won’t judge your setup, I promise 😉 #backyardchickens #chickbrooder #raisingchicks #homesteadlife

The chicks have all made it to two weeks old which is when I always breathe a sigh of relief! No more worrying about pasty butt or the risk of failure to thrive. But that doesn’t mean the job of tending to your chicks is any less important now than in the first two weeks. Here are my Do’s & Dont’s to keep your chicks thriving! 🐥🐥 DO monitor temperature inside the brooder and be sure to raise the heat source each week. You may need to raise and lower it daily as we get warmer days but still have cool nights. DO check feed and water multiple times a day to remove any 💩 and bedding the chicks have thrown into it. DO sprinkle chick grit on top of their feed to prepare them for digesting greens and other treats. DO offer their starter feed in your hand daily to get them accustomed to you. DO pick them up by placing your hand below them not by reaching down from above. DO clean the brooder often and remove any wet bedding promptly. 🐥🐥 DON’T start feeding treats too early. Chick starter has all the nutrition they need. DON’T forget to keep a screen over the top of the brooder to prevent early high flyers from escaping. DON’T worry if your chicks are scared of the hand 🖐️ coming into the brooder. With time, and as they realize it’s often holding food and eventually treats, they will get more and more accustomed to you. DON’T let it get too crowded in the brooder as the chicks grow because that can lead to boredom and negative pecking behaviors. Chicks will be ready for more space / larger accommodations by the time they are a few weeks old. 🐥🐥 My chicks will be moving out of the brooder in about a week when I’ll let them have the secure run that is attached to our coop. I’ll keep two heat lamps on to make sure they have enough warmth as well still be having lows in the 40’s. I’m excited to have them in the bigger space soon because that makes it much easier to bond with them and lap chicken training can commence in earnest! Do you have any tips to add to my list? 🐥🐥 #chicks #chickens #backyardchickens #babychick #chickentips #raisingchicks
