STMost people focus on heat alone, but sound tells you just as much about what’s happening in your brooder.
When one chick peeps sharply and continuously while the others are quiet, it’s often the first clue something needs checking.
Happy chicks chirp softly while eating and exploring. A loud, repeated peep usually means distress, though the reason can change.
I always start by checking temperature.
Cold chicks cluster tightly under the warmth.
Hot chicks move away, pant, or hold their wings out.
When conditions are right, chicks spread comfortably throughout the brooder.
After that, I look for pasty butt.
A blocked vent can cause discomfort and distress, so it’s important to check.
If both heat and vent look good and one chick keeps peeping, the next step is checking the crop.
In this video, one chick is wandering with an empty crop while the others are busy eating. That constant noise is often the sign.
This usually means the chick hasn’t learned how to eat yet. I show how I offer tiny sips of egg yolk with Avi-Vital, slowly and carefully, until the crop begins to fill. Most chicks learn within a few days, though some take closer to a week.
It’s normal for chicks to complain briefly after lights go out or for a few other easy to spot reasons but the one that keeps peeping afterward is the one to check.
