NEHimachal’s Most Misunderstood Tree: Chir Pine
In Himachal Pradesh, the Chir Pine (Pinus roxburghii) is often labelled as one of the most problematic trees. These pine trees are known for dominating the landscape - wherever they grow, other plants rarely survive.
One of the major issues with Chir trees is their needle-like dry leaves. These dry pine needles catch fire extremely quickly and are a major contributor to forest fires in the region. Additionally, when these needles fall on roads and trails, they become dangerously slippery, leading to accidents.
But despite these issues, Chir Pine trees play a crucial ecological and economic role: The fallen needles help prevent landslides by tightly binding the soil, especially on steep hill slopes.
Chir trees provide wood, resin, and latex. The latex extracted is used in perfumes, Ayurvedic medicines, and several industrial products. In higher altitudes, some Chir trees produce Chilgoza (pine nuts), which are sold at ₹5000–₹6000 per kg in the market.
Certain species of Chir trees can live for up to 1000 years, offering shelter to birds, squirrels, and insects.
The Chir tree, though controversial, is a part of Himachal’s natural heritage. Like every element of nature, it holds both challenges and deep-rooted benefits for our environment and livelihoods.
