CIWhen I first started preparing for the CISM exam, I genuinely believed the ISACA official guide was all I needed. I mean… it’s the book, right?
But here’s the truth:
❌ It’s not designed to help you pass.
✅ It’s designed to explain the framework — not teach you how ISACA thinks.
I spent weeks re-reading definitions, trying to memorize domains, and wondering why nothing was sticking.
What actually helped me shift gears and finally get it?
💡 Realizing that the CISM exam is less about what you know — and more about how you apply it as a manager.
You’re not just learning concepts — you’re learning how to think like ISACA.
Here’s what I wish someone told me earlier:
1️⃣ Memorizing the book won’t save you. You need to understand decision-making logic — especially in tricky scenarios.
2️⃣ Practice questions matter — not just for right answers, but to recognize why the wrong ones are wrong.
3️⃣ Keywords are key. Learn to spot them and how they relate to risk, governance, impact, etc.
4️⃣ Focus on roles. Who should act? When? Who owns what? CISM is all about roles and responsibilities.
5️⃣ Don't study alone. I learned more by explaining things out loud (sometimes to ChatGPT, sometimes to my cats 🤷♀️).
