My Orange Tree survived winter temps in the teens with these two strategies! 1. Incandescent Christmas lights - they emit a low amount of heat so you can wrap your citrus during the holidays and keep the lights on until the last freeze date! 2. Frost cloth - keeps the wind and frost from affecting your citrus and insulates the heat from the incandescent lights! This is my Brown Select Satsuma Orange which is also a cold hardy variety of orange that grows in the grown here on my property in growing zone 8b and it tastes amazing! For Sale. Further information contact Rob 985 788 5603. A blood orange is a variety of sweet orange (Citrus Γ— sinensis) known for its crimson, blood-colored flesh, which develops due to anthocyanin pigments, giving it a sweet, raspberry-like flavor. The plant is an evergreen tree with glossy, dark green leaves, fragrant white flowers, and fruit that ripens from winter to spring, requiring warm days and cool nights for the best color and flavor. It’s grown in warm climates or in containers in cooler zones, needs full sun, and is self-pollinating. Plant characteristics Foliage: Glossy, dark green, aromatic leaves. Flowers: Fragrant, white, star-shaped clusters in late winter/early spring. Fruit: Medium-sized with a reddish blush on the rind; flesh ranges from streaked red to deep crimson. Flavor: Sweet with hints of raspberry or strawberry. Size: Typically grows 8–15 feet tall, but can be kept smaller with pruning, especially in containers. Growing conditions Sun: Full sun (6+ hours) is ideal. Climate: Prefers warm climates; needs cool nights to develop deep red color; protect from frost (below 28Β°F). Soil: Well-draining soil; avoid waterlogging. Watering: Water thoroughly at planting; monitor soil moisture carefully. Fertilizer: Use a citrus fertilizer regularly. Uses Excellent for fresh eating, juicing, salads, desserts, and cocktails. Attracts birds, bees, and butterflies. Varieties Moro: The most popular, known for its deep, intense red flesh. Tarocco: Often has a red blush and sweet flavor. Sanguinelli: Another popular red-fleshed variety.

All of these orange varieties are a hybrid between a mandarin and a Changsha tangerine and are fairly cold hardy varieties. 🍊 They grow smaller easily peel-able fruit. (Similar to the Cutie oranges that you find in the grocery store)🍊 They all need 8-10 hours of sun, like being planted in well-draining soil, and can easily be grown in containers. β˜€οΈ 1. Arctic Frost Satsumas- Can handle temperatures down to 10Β° Fahrenheit. They are the variety that has been shown to be able to tolerate the cold the best. ❄️ β€’ They can grow up to 8 to 12 feet tall if planted in the ground and up to 6 feet tall if grown in a pot. β€’ I would recommend only planting them in the ground if you live in zones 8-11, and would still protect them in the winter with frost cloth when the temperature dipped below freezing for the first few years. (Personally, I recommend growing them in a pot or container for few years until they get a bit older and stronger before you plant them in the ground.) 2. Orange Frost Satsuma- Can handle temperatures down to 15Β° Fahrenheit. 🍊 β€’ Can grow up to 8-10 feet tall if planted in the ground and up to 4-6 feet tall if grown in a container. β€’ I’d recommend growing them in a pot or container, unless you live in zones 9-11. And I’d protect them with frost cloth in the winter if the temperatures dip below freezing, or you can bring them inside. 3. Bumper Satsuma- Can handle temperatures down to 20Β° Fahrenheit. Are the least cold hardy of the 3 varieties. 🍊 Can grow up to 10 feet tall if planted in the ground and up to 5-7 feet tall if grown in containers. (I would only recommend planting these directly in the ground if you live in zones 9B-11. ) β€’ Protect them with frost cloth if the temperatures dip below freezing or bring them inside during the winter. β€’ Produces loads of fruit clumped like grapes, hence why this variety is called Bumper Satsuma.
