🗓️ Clamming season is open year round except for July 15 thru September 30 while clams are reproducing
🌊 Best to go during low tide which is lowest in late spring and early summer
🌧️ Be prepared to get wet! Rubber boats and waders are highly recommended, we got ours at Big 5 Sporting Goods!
Last year was the first time I tried clam digging, though my family has been doing it for years. My grandparents still go every April and I’m super excited to join them again soon!
Most people dig for clams using a “clam gun” which you can see me use further into the video. This is definitely the easiest way to get them out but my family is wild and all use shovels to dig after the clams!
It will feel nearly impossible at first to find the little holes that appear in the sand after the tide gets pulled out, but these holes show where the clams are digging down. If you’re using the typical clamming tools, you’ll want to put your tool right above that hole and wiggle it down as far as you can, typically at a slight angle to avoid hitting the clam. If you’re using a shovel, start digging around the hole instead of right on it. Hopefully you’ll suck that clam right up into your tool or find it while digging after it!

THHOMESCHOOL CLAMMING CLASS
Yesterday my family and I led another homeschool family in a class all about harvesting clams along the Alsea Bay.
We taught our new homeschool friends how to properly identify the species of clam we were harvesting (cockle clams), where they live and how to dig them up, and all of the rules and regulations that come along with harvesting clams in the state of Oregon.
A huge THANKS to @valeriesagers for reaching out to me months ago to make this happen, these are our most favorite kind of homeschool days!

I love cockles! In Oregon, this type of clam lives in shallow bays and estuaries like Yaquina Bay, Netarts Bay, and Alsea Bay. They sit just under the surface, usually in the top few inches of sand or mud, which makes them relatively easy to harvest by hand or rake during low tide. I hope you get out there and take clams this spring! 👏 Make sure you have your shellfish license, calm the shellfish safety hotline to look out for closures, and only keep your daily limit. And have fuuuuun.
